The $629 EVF doesn't come with any warranty at all, take good care of it!

Goodness! Never notice that. But I believe as long as you don't dip it in water and handle it with care, it should not break down easily.

That's really bad and unacceptable. In proper countries items like that have to be covered by a minimum warranty by law.

Yep, I had the same issue with the optional external EVF for the NEX5n

Are boxes for new RX1s supposed to be sealed (i.e., have a Sony sticker-seal on them)? I've gone to two stores so far, and their RX1s were both in unsealed boxes and they insisted that's how they are shipped. But on sites such as DPReview, people talk about (and show images of) boxes with a Sony seal on them. When I asked the question on DPReview, people from the US and Europe said indeed that the boxes are sealed and cautioned me about buying an RX1 in an unsealed box. So what's the story here in Singapore?

Most stores in Singapore don't keep display models, if someone wants to touch one they will just open a new box anyway.

and the Salesperson would say: "If you are not buying, sorry, we would not load the battery inside for test shots. But you can feel and look at the camera only without powering it up." becos they have only 1 or 2 sets on hand.

same for the RX100 at some stores.

Exactly but in other countries they wouldn't be allowed to sell it as a new item anymore, it's an open box / customer return / refurbished item already. ;)

May be able to invoke the Lemon law to get a replacement if the EVF is faulty?

That's just valid for 7 days.

Hmmm. At one store (the Sony Store at Sim Lim) they wouldn't let me look at or hold or check the RX1 before buying then they wanted to sell me an unsealed box. The guy told me that if something was wrong with it, I'd have to go to the Sony repair depot to get it fixed under warranty. Why the hell would I want to plonk down that kind of money without checking the item for defects first??

When I bought my a900 at Cathay (Peninsula) some years back, they unpacked the camera in front of me and let me try it out (not to see if I wanted to buy, but to make sure all was fine). They also specifically told me NOT to register the camera in the first few days so I could check to see whether everything was in good working order... and I could exchange it for another unit if there was a clear problem.

That's a little strange considering the cost of this camera (and considering that they usually have other models on display). When I was up in KL last week, the Sony Store there had a display model that you could play with (with a lot of Sony packaging and branding around it), but I wasn't ready to buy yet, and I wasn't sure about warranty validity. Frustrating...

it's all because of kiasu mentality here in Singapore..

Sony outlets usually have display models but I was talking about the myriad of regular camera bazars in S'pore.

Bought mine from another Sony Store. Rushing off for meeting so didn't check carefully. Went home, tested and found a small white spot on the sensor. Not obvious, and can only tell if you know how to check sensor spots. White spot will not appear under normal shooting.

Went back the next day and did a one-to-one exchange (got to wait for another day for new set to be transferred from another store though).

Good to buy from Sony Store or shops that have 7-days one-to-one exchange policy. Anyway, this is sold at the same price everywhere, so better get from reputable stores which can commit this.

Useful to hear this story. I definitely want an exchange period like I've had with my other Sony cameras (never had to do an exchange, fortunately). Thanks for the info. I'll stick with the official Sony stores (like I said, I had my problem with the 'Sony Store' in Sim Lim, but while it only sells Sony goods, I think that's one of those affiliate stores, not a Sony-owned store).

All shops have that policy.

Actually not all the shops have this policy.

Like what Docno mentioned, the Sony Sim Lim store does not offer this, and another store (you can PM me if you need to know) in Funan also will not do one-to-one exchange as I used to have some problem with my Nex as well. They will only advice customer to go to the Sony Service Centre at Wisma for repair or advice. Sony Service Centre will likely just repair instead of exchange since they don't carry ready stocks as well.

Anyway, most of the stores will need you to sign on their original receipt which states that the "goods are in good order and no exchange or refund allowed". 7-days one-to-one is goodwill, I think.

Certainly hope all stores will be transparent and service oriented in ensuring that any faulty products are exchangeable, but good for the customers to at least ask them if they offer such 7-days return policy. You will be surprised that quite a few "reputable" stores will say no.

Just because they don't tell you doesn't mean they don't offer it. Anyway, they all have to provide the 6 months period now.
