Sony - RX1

Too bad. Otherwise can hear from u as to how the Zeiss perform against the Leica.

Who knows.... ;). BTW, is the "Sonnar" an actual Sonnar design? Curious. Have seen Zeiss using the "Sonnar" designation but the design was more planar.

Awesome. Looking forward to yr review post on it. Haha

Yeah it is, due to the short flange distance.

Still curious as I've seen designs using 6-7 elements. Could not find a block diagram of the lens. Found this on another forum instead. Need all the experts to help:

==================
The 24/1.8 is 8 elements in 7 groups. The new RX-1 "Sonnar" is also 8 elements in 7 groups.

The 5cm F2 Sonnar is 6 elements in 3 groups, 1-3-2.

The 5cm F1.5 Sonnar is 7 elements in three groups. 1-3-3.

The C-Sonnar 50/1.5 is 6 elements, physically in 4 groups of glass. "Optically", it is a 1-3-3 with the middle group a "triplet", the middle element of the center triplet is "air" which acts as a lens with a refractive index of 1. This practice goes back a long time.

So unless the lenses in the Sony have a LOT of "air elements", I suspect it is not a real Sonnar formula lens.

Sonnar/Planar is not determined by the number of elements. Rather, Sonnar is just the Zeiss code for fixed focal length, large aperture lenses. Sonnar comes from the german word "Sonne", meaning sun.

Sonnar has *less* glass-to-air surfaces and thus has better contrast and reduced flare, especially compared to Tessar. In shorter focal lengths, the rear elements are placed further back, thus making them incompatible with SLR designs and hence have been mainly used in rangefinders (and now the RX1).

So yes, by Zeiss' own definitions and designs, it is a true Sonnar.

You know me too well. Pre-ordered the M and the new Cron ASPH. :embrass:

When you do have the new M and Cron, please start a new thread and post your experience with it. I would sure like to know how both compare with existing bodies and lenses. BTW, having conversations with you about photography stuff sure makes me think my RX1 is some elcheapo PnS. :(

It isn't cheap but it's still a PnS. ;)

How much is revo selling?

Yes, asked ard. Mostly at SGD3,999 (incl gst) w 16Gb free SDcard.

The stock seems to b replenished weekly n each time 1-3 units each shop.

Either stock level in market is controlled via slow release, or it is really factory cnt cope w demand.

For those who dun want to b on the waiting list, call up Sony stores (not authorized dealers) freq to check.

Had some time to kill while waiting to pick up my wife. Walked into the Sony Centre and was surprised how small the PnS camera was. Picked it up for its compactness. Got rid of the 16GB card and instead, topped up for an extra battery. Other surprises. Auto ISO cannot set the max ISO. No optical stabilizer. Trying now to charge with a generic USB charger....... guess I have to have keep yet another charger.

Haha.... $$ is relative, but memories etched through photos are priceless.

You can set max ISO. Press the function key, select ISO, select auto ISO, select max ISO, set value.

No, but I do have quite a few optical VFs from Leica.

Oic. Dunno how it will work on d RX1 though.
