Sony Cybershot WX-1

I just brought the WX1 for a holiday. It's nice as a EDC. The decent iso capability, lowlight mode and panaromic feature is great fun. The metering is not reliable and is often wonky, colours are sometimes painful to look at. But it's a small camera after all. I left my m8 and DSLR at home and focused on having fun instead of lugging so much gear around.

Only one little thing that appears strange. Fill flash on a dark background appears to give the subject a cutout with shadow effect. Ruins it totally. Example below.

There are two things here - the flash a little too strong, Flash colour temp different.

Usually, powering down your flash slightly may improve things, or alternatively you may want to try going without flash - though that would mean the subject would be under exposed, but this is predominantly a scene that is back lit and also the light is warm careful balancing of the flash power and also the flash colour is important.

A camera with a flash gun with a GFLS + amber dome might do the trick... WX1 isn't equipped for such shots.

I agree that this shot he was too close but for a compact cam, it should be able to handle such a shot easily. I believe that using the Twilight mode in this scenario without flash should yield very acceptable result.
However, this is not what TS is after. He was refering to a very harsh "drop-down" shadow effect as if the backgound was a from a printed backdrop. Please refer to the full size photo for a better understanding.
The only solution which I think may reduce/minimize the effect is by diffusing the flash with tissue.

Just got my WX1 today, was trying out all the diff mode, not bad for a compact camera. i like the pano sweep..cool.
Which mode you guy's usually set to for day time photo taking?

I like to use the Anti Motion Blur mode even for day time outdoor shooting to totally eliminate any slightest motion blur. Really good for capturing sharp candid shots even when your hands are not steady yet.

The panOps function on the WX1 is really great.

I want this function in my DSLR.

The OC, Orchard Central.

it's not too good for vertical pano at 24mm. zoom a bit and stand a little further to reduce the distortion.

I've tried the Twilight in Scene mode against Handheld Twilight. Handheld is always better. So why do one need Scene Mode Twilight and also when do we really use it against Handheld Twilight? Most of the time IA for daytime and Handheld Twilight for evening is what I use. Do I choose Anti-blur to replace IA for daytime as sometimes I do get blur images when someone is walking past when I start pressing the shutter. Happened when shooting my wife standing beside one of the raindeer along Orchard Road. If I'd used Anti-blur, will that person appear as a freeze image as I always want everything captured without any blur image (like seen in postcards).

Going to Vegas and Grand Canyon for CES. Would like to know the best shooting mode for night time along the Strip. Also what's the best mode for shooting dancing fountain at Bellagio. With all the security going on, I've decided to skip my GH-1 with both 14-140mm & 20mm lens.

With both handheld twilight & anti blur modes, the camera will default to a higher ISO range when taking the shot resulting in a shot with lesser instance of 'ghosting'

My WX1 is on Anti-Motion Blur mode all the time so that the camera is always ready to take a shot. Test it for yourself... set to Anti-Motion Blur mode, shake your camera up and down and snap the shutter at the same time. You would be amazed that the camera can still take a decent shot this way. The WX1 and TX1 are the only cameras I know of that can take a shot when treated this way. ;)

Will Anti-motion Blur works perfectly for night shots like the dancing fountain at Bellagio?

If it is a night shot, you probably should use the Handheld Twilight mode as it would set the camera to a lower ISO than if the Anti-Motion Blur mode when used at night. You can of course try out both mode on the spot to see which one performs better to you. After all it does depend quite a lot on how bright the fountain is in your shot at the time.

I got one of those dual adaptors too but it gives me an error message every time I switch from playback to record mode. It works fine just has an annoying message. Does your adapter do that as well Xtemujin?
