Sony A33

with kit lens.

generally, mscolor price is $100 lesser than sonystyle with 8gb and bag.

sonystyle bishan that i asked does not have any single freebies.

Thx for the info :)

I'll endure abit and wait for the body only to arrive.

Hope my a850 dont become a white elephant after getting the dslt...

Initial observation: for video

af sound with inbody motor is quite noticeable.

Af sound with 1855 sam is quite ok, near silent and seems faster as well.

This thread is poisonous

This Sony a33 or a55 sounds very good...:thumbsup:

It's at the top of my list suddenly... (was Pentax K-x)
Does anyone know if the loss of light (1/3 EV) through the translucent mirror is of any concern? How does it really affect the camera compared to a DSLR with opaque mirror?

Suddenly I'm looking out for Sony portrait lenses..

Carl Zeiss 85mm f1.4 or 135mm f1.8, two of of the best portraiture lens of all systems!

With the super shallow DOF of such lenses, you will be glad that the A33 and A55 allows u to magnify the image and do micro focusing adjustment thru their EVF!

No other cameras allows u to do that.

Many people criticizes EVFs, but I for one am glad the DSLTs have such good EVFs, cos this sort of micro adjustments is critical when doing portraiture shots with the above wide aperture lenses, cos the DOF is way too thin, very easy to get OOF. And also its great for macro shots as well :)

Frankly speaking, i do not notice any loss of light or image quality of a33.

In fact i did a head to head comparison with my nex5 both using kit lenses.

At equal iso level, eg. Iso1600 i am getting same exposure level. To my surprise, a33 was having a faster shutter speed of 1/125s compared to nex5 of 1/100s for everything else same f4.5, ev0, multi metering, spot focusing, etc all same.

Sharpness is very good for A33 though i can see nex5 produces cleaner images from iso1600 onwards but a33 retains more details.

The EVF is really good. I am hugely amazed its larger than my 7D :( Only thing I din like was the 'rainbow tearing' effect

Anyway -> I tried taking a few shots and how come there's still a mechanical motion when the shutter is depressed? I know the mirror's locked down so why is there a mechanical motion?

Don't know. I am not exactly sure if that is really the mechanical motion sound or simply a simulated sound by the camera.

Thank you for your kind answer... most likely after Sept (Photokina).. will make a decision - hopefully all the brands have shown their cards by then.. :) :)

Well I definitely felt the camera 'jerk'. Don't tell me Sony have a special motor to simulate mirror slap?

Hmm could it be the shutter? But it definitely felt rather heavy for a shutter. (thinking of how the GF1 and PEN have such light shutters)

Not sure also. Sony had patent this technology. Don't think they would give us more details of how it actually works.

the 50mm f1.8 also very good, has shallow DOF as well which u can utilize with the EVF's magnifier. :)

I see. Then should consider A33, since A55 sure more expensive. For lenses, look for older Minolta lenses, they are more affordable. If worry about recording sound affected by AF motor, try external mic.

The newly made in thailand 18-55sam seems to have a quieter af motor. During video, the af motor noise is unnoticeable and very fast.

A33 and a55 seems to have a mechanical shutter same as nex, thats why there is still shutter sound but a bit less noisy compared to nex. But its still quieter than a500/550 as there is no
mirror flap.

Wish for a day they implement electronic shutter like pns will be perfect.

Not much difference really, 1/3 stop isn't really noticeable...

Btw, if it is out of your budget, can consider the korean made Samyang 85mm F1.4. MF-ing on A33 was extremely easy, I got perfect focus about 90% of the time, much higher than when I was using a split prism focusing screen on my A700! Its a full manual lens though, but it costs 1/4 the price of the CZ or minolta version.

Played with it just now at Jurong Point Sonystyle.

5 mins through using the EVF, I say it's very useful. Those who are thinking of getting the a2XX ~ a5XX may just forget about those.

Just get the a33 or hold on until the a55 arrive if u requires it's extra feature. I can't say handling/button feature wise is superior to my A700 if I require quick change in settings, but with only 10 mins of playing I already like it.

Some mention it could magnify image for fine focus adjustment in EVF, just that I can't get it to work.

Does that feature exist?

I just tried at IMM.. You need to enable it inside menu.. I have to say ergonomic is fantastic , buttons r eazy to press.... and really true MF-ing is really eazy .. but need to get used to EVF.. overall I m really impressed with the cam ;)
