Here is a live review on the stomach of the models using the Sony's Alpha at the Roadshow today.

I am quite a particular person, noise starts to get noticable from iso 200, and really gets bad from iso 400.

For Sony, perhaps that has improved quite a lot.

Of course the function is a lot easier... However, on the noise level, D50 still wins.

from what i had read the D50 also win the d70s and D200 handdown(noise)
hat off to the D50 i really like it
oth this alpha-100 is sony first release...hopefully by next release the noise problem will be better

Yes you are right. That's why I've sold off the D70s and using D50 now. hahaha

I am newbie..So shall I say that how good a cam is , depending how good it can control the noise level ?

If Yes, then based on reading this thread, shall I conclude that D50 is better than D200 ?

If No, why spend all the entire effort just to look at nosie level..?

If really talking about ISO noise alone here, Canon's CMOS still win hands down
see Canon 1DMK2N (1.3X crop though) ISO1600 in action

If you think that my effort in going down to the roadshow and lug along my lappie, take the photos, transfer, come home, crop, host, post for all to see is the ENTIRE EFFORT, then ok lor. Am I supposed to be honoured or what?

Emm.. Thanks for your compliment.

(PS: To answer your question, of couse you don't determine on noise alone. However, if you are a lazy guy like me, I would avoid noise cos I hate post-processing. Hope that answers your question.)

Uncle, CMOS cameras out of the league. Dun compare like that leh. Want to compare a prototype sensor in research with CMOS sensor or not...

I think it's depend on individual personal preferences, some prefer low ISO noise, colour, more lens support, built in Anti-shake, high quality lens (olympus's zuiko), build/ergonomics, price, friends etc.

So we choose which ever system we like. So far I find KM suit me quite well, hopefully Sony also. :)

I am not that old yet
Just compare on available DSLR cameras setting only.

not really..if that the the case d200 would have to be thrown overboard....liao
noise...batt life....
perhap the reason why it sell like hot cake could be it had that pro and feel good factor and the batt grip.

Sony also had it own clearvid cmos sensor currently in used in their highend high definition video cam.
read this
new sensor as having improved low-light capabilities, and improved dynamic range. While a little confusing, what the company is suggesting is that by rotating the grid, they are able to match the image resolution of a camera that uses a higher resolution sensor. Hence, the company is comparing the light gathering capabilities of (as an example) a four megapixel sensor with the capabilities of the two megapixel sensor they believe will match it for real-world resolution. Obviously the light gathering area for each pixel can be greater on the two megapixel sensor, and hence there is likely to be an improvement in both low-light capabilities / noise and dynamic range.

They had an ace up their sleeve...just that they haven't implement it in the still camera yet :)

A100's pics is indeed noisy. But not many ppl would use iso1600 that often.

Besides... it has supersteadyshot... just limit yourself to iso400 or 800 and turn the antishake

on.

This is from one of your D50 photo...based on the EXIF Gain Control, it's at "Low gain up", my guess it's ISO 400. And this image I assuming is not at 100% crop as well. :dunno:
