Hi all,
I noticed Octane69 suggesting a goth idea.
Here's some (maybe useless) tips.
1) In terms of architectural diversity and preservation, Malacca should be better than S'pore. Once a British colony (like S'pore), there may exist some goth-appropriate or goth-like buildings. Send a recce team to find some (don't come up with the lame excuse about "last minute don't have goth building"). Please, don't shoot goth themes in front of a Buddhist temple (properly style your images - avoid making them and yourself a laughing stock).
2) It's best if you can find purely goth architectured buildings. However,
Edwardian building designs should have a strong gothic appearance. Check the web about how gothic and Edwardian buildings look like. (I'm not a architect so please double-check on my information.)
3) Cemeteries may also be appropriate. For goodness sake, goth originated from the west (Europe, if I'm correct). It would be strongly connected to the dominant religion - Christianity or a related sect. If you do a shoot in a Muslim cemetery, you risk incurring the wrath of God-knows-what (and if you survive, gain yourself images which look downright silly). I'm not implying that you can happily do your photography in a cemetery full of marble crosses and angels. (Limit the number of people, or bring the new Pope to give you a hand -- don't quote me on this.)
4) Some churches were built with a gothic facade. I may be wrong but goth appears to have taken on a satanic or evil sub-culture and deviated from its original ideas (please research to double-check). What I'm trying to say is, don't jump in front of a gothic church and expect the priest inside to come out looking at you all with a smiling face.
5) Perhaps your safest and most do-able bet would be to use old run down stone/brick buildings. (Don't use wooden or attap houses.)
6) Search for a good make-up artist who can do gothic-look make-up.
7) Search for an appropiate model who can pull off the goth look. Humans only have 1 face, and a model can't carry every possible look. Usually, baby-faced models should be a no-no for goth shoots. If you can't seduce a Caucasian to do it, bribe a Eurasian. Last resort, blackmail a very lucky fair-skinned Chinese with pronounced facial features to do it.
8) Find and steal/buy goth clothing for the model. (I wish you all lots of luck trying to find something really goth in Singapore.)
Hey Pro Image,
You were previously in Melbourne. Dig deep in your mind and recall how some of the gothic and Edwardian buildings here look like. Having lived in Melbourne should help you since Melbourne is more European in architecture than other Aussie cities. I'm sure you would also have seen Caucasians dressed in gothic clothing walking in the city.
