Hi all,

I noticed Octane69 suggesting a goth idea.

Here's some (maybe useless) tips.

1) In terms of architectural diversity and preservation, Malacca should be better than S'pore. Once a British colony (like S'pore), there may exist some goth-appropriate or goth-like buildings. Send a recce team to find some (don't come up with the lame excuse about "last minute don't have goth building"). Please, don't shoot goth themes in front of a Buddhist temple (properly style your images - avoid making them and yourself a laughing stock).

2) It's best if you can find purely goth architectured buildings. However,
Edwardian building designs should have a strong gothic appearance. Check the web about how gothic and Edwardian buildings look like. (I'm not a architect so please double-check on my information.)

3) Cemeteries may also be appropriate. For goodness sake, goth originated from the west (Europe, if I'm correct). It would be strongly connected to the dominant religion - Christianity or a related sect. If you do a shoot in a Muslim cemetery, you risk incurring the wrath of God-knows-what (and if you survive, gain yourself images which look downright silly). I'm not implying that you can happily do your photography in a cemetery full of marble crosses and angels. (Limit the number of people, or bring the new Pope to give you a hand -- don't quote me on this.)

4) Some churches were built with a gothic facade. I may be wrong but goth appears to have taken on a satanic or evil sub-culture and deviated from its original ideas (please research to double-check). What I'm trying to say is, don't jump in front of a gothic church and expect the priest inside to come out looking at you all with a smiling face.

5) Perhaps your safest and most do-able bet would be to use old run down stone/brick buildings. (Don't use wooden or attap houses.)

6) Search for a good make-up artist who can do gothic-look make-up.

7) Search for an appropiate model who can pull off the goth look. Humans only have 1 face, and a model can't carry every possible look. Usually, baby-faced models should be a no-no for goth shoots. If you can't seduce a Caucasian to do it, bribe a Eurasian. Last resort, blackmail a very lucky fair-skinned Chinese with pronounced facial features to do it.

8) Find and steal/buy goth clothing for the model. (I wish you all lots of luck trying to find something really goth in Singapore.)

Hey Pro Image,

You were previously in Melbourne. Dig deep in your mind and recall how some of the gothic and Edwardian buildings here look like. Having lived in Melbourne should help you since Melbourne is more European in architecture than other Aussie cities. I'm sure you would also have seen Caucasians dressed in gothic clothing walking in the city.

Hi Haley (and all other models),

Just some well-meaning words and tips to help you along with your freelance modeling career.

I believe it's quite standard practice around the world that if models are paid, photographers are not obliged to give them a copy of the images. If the photographer gives the model images, it's never (or very seldom) all of the images, and it's only a matter of polite, friendly, good-will gesture. Paying the model $$ usually means no images for the model.

There's another practice around the world called Time For Prints (TFP), and in recent times with digital cameras, came Time For CD (TFCD). Models engaged under TFP/TFCD basis are not paid. Time spent by the model is rewarded with images in print or in a CD.

This is why newbie and inexperienced models tend to work on TFP/TFCD basis to gradually build up their portfolios with better images over time, then switching to do paid work later. Some experienced and professional models are clever in the sense that they also accept TFP/TFCD if they wanted to have images of an idea/theme which they lack in their portfolios, instead of only accepting paid work.

TFP or pay, collect as many images as you can from the nice photographers whom you have worked with here. After gathering the images, don't just chuck them aside. Just as the photographers have sieved out the bad, blooper and blunder shots (humans do make mistakes), you should select a few good ones to show and promote yourself as a freelance model. Keeping images in an album at home won't get you any work, at least, not beyond ClubSnap.

Create a personal website. Some models do, and 2 of the Aussie models I have worked with, have their own webby (with their own URL paid for yearly). I wouldn't advise you to do this unless you really want to do modeling a lot (as an occupation), otherwise the $$ spent on the webby and URL may not be worth it.

Alternatively, create a profile on a model portfolio hosting website. There are a few good ones on the web, and most are free for models to sign up. It's like signing up for a free Geocities web-hosting account but it's tailor-designed for models to show images and list their types of work available for.

Hi Pro Image,

Thanks for noticing (and pondering) on the comments I previously gave dcfan21 for his series of Japanese high school sailor uniform portraits. In all honesty, I would say he did better because his portraits were more solidly conceived. Yes, they do look like they were copied from others who have done them in the past, but at least he got the whole picture/story/idea right (apart from the mismatching model's backpack).

Jamapela,

Even as I was on a roll the last couple of days, your comments were not those that got my wrath going. Actually, even I don't agree with some of your observations, I have to agree/admit that is based on pure personal preferences. Your comments were meant to be constructive, as compare to some that were mean spirited and meant to hurt.

Back to your comments regarding Haley's school girl/sailor moon theme, I believe it is grossly unfair to say the shoot was not well conceived. To be frank, the shoot was a feeding frenzy. Time limits all over, there is simply very little time to properly build a story around the pictures, and that was definately not the objective of this outing. If we were to demand a carefully concieved and executed photoshoot, we will not be joining the shoot, but engage a model to shoot one on one, maybe, max 2 photographers.

Personally, I feel every rule is made to be broken. If we as photograhers, have to abound by rules, lots of inovative images will not have been made. My ows feelings, if we have to adhere to convention wisdom and the pursuit of exact replication of a theme, life is boring.

However, your comments are well thought out, well presented, and were given with well intentions. It did make me think about my style of shooting, and in some ways, reinforced what I like, of which one is of contrasting and mismatching subject sand backgrounds, but your make me think about possibilties of more harmonized shots.

Yes I stayed in Melbourne for about 3 1/2 years. Studied and work. Well no matter how beautiful a building maybe in Singapore or Malaysia, it will never been the same as Melbourne. Melbourne Gothic Buildings and Churches are very nice and there is no way to compare or even come close to it.

I have done some shoots with Aussie girls but mainly on Fashion shoots only. No Gothic look or whatsoever. Gothic will be something relatively new to me as I never venture into something like that yet. Yep after all this years of shooting, I have not done Gothic Theme as yet.

If I was in Melbourne, finding a building for Gothic theme is to easy. Besides, the weather over there is not as humid. So wearing a Gothic dress in Singapore is a killer to the model!

Just to let you about the prints we are giving out. All the models are paid. The prints which Haley asked for is a kind gesture by us to give to her and the rest of the models. We know that paid model do not get a single print or digital file. So we are kind enough to give to them. We are not here to make any profit out from the model as this outing(we mentioned earlier) is all about having fun and get to know one another. So the free prints and digital file is given out of free will. Hope you understand this part.

Over in Singapore, there are much lesser models creating their own websites as they do not find the necessary too. The problem is some of the client sometimes still want to see them in person. Unlike Japan, Korea and Hong Kong the models usually have their personnel websites with their portfolios on the net. So Singapore is still way lacking in some IT areas although some considered Singapore is a an advance country.

So you are staying in Melbourne for good?

Hi Pro Image,

I won't dwell too much on the goth topic since it may be off-track. All I want to say is that it's been done before in Singapore by a very small handful of creative local and foreign photographers and open-minded S'porean "models". I have done it myself but we had to be realistic about the kind of goth clothes/buildings available in S'pore. By the way, you may have gotten the wrong impression, but it's not too hot to wear goth clothes in S'pore. Realistically speaking, almost anything is too hot to be worn in S'pore.

I mentioned you being in Melbourne so that other CS users will pressure you into remembering how gothic buildings/structures look like, and you'll be roped in for the recce team... hahaha.

With the TFP/TFCD/paid matter, I was only advising Haley and the other models. Besides, I DID SAID that it was a good gesture on the part of all the nice photographers (including you) that copies are given to the models. I DID NOT say that you photographers are being baddies. I sung praises of your good gesture.

Aiyah! You went to Australia to do mainly fashion? :sticktong

For more than a decade, I noticed S'pore photographers (even the "professionals" who carry big pro cameras) doing fashion/casual, day in day out, year after year. Maybe it's not completely the photographers' fault for their inability to think out of the box because we all know that there's only "so much" conservative Asian models are willing to do. It's worse to have elderly parental folks who narrow-mindedly equate modeling to porno-making and photographer's website as porno website. (Not bullshitting, I kena from such people in S'pore before.)

It eats me to see nice glamourous images in FHM, Maxim, Cleo, Swimsuit Illustrated, and all over the web, but not being able to do it in S'pore.

Ultimately, I got fed up!! I went to East Coast beach and aimed my super duper 200000mm lens towards the nearest liberal country called Australia.

You know as well as I do, that in Australia, you can easily execute ideas/themes which are frowned upon in S'pore, such as swimwear, lingerie, goth, punk, cowboy, fetish, nude, artistic nude, and whatever else you dare to explore and execute, etc. It's simple, there's more than fashion/casual. Since you have worked with Caucasian models, you would have found them open and helpful in improving your photography, coming up with ideas and props.

As long as I'm not reduced to the state of a homeless beggar, I don't see myself coming back to S'pore. It's simple (again), what I can freely photograph in Australia is only going to happen in at least 20 years from now in S'pore.

Such a pity. I have no S'porean photography friends in Melbourne who share my feelings/thoughts. Those I have met didn't share my feelings/thoughts, and kept their minds tightly closed to the opportunities I told them about and wanted to share with them. :thumbsd:

Are you coming back to Melbourne? If you do, a lot of difference can happen to your photography. This, I'm not bluffing. This, you only need to be here to discover how true.

Yes, only fashion.

Yes I know what you can do in Australia, especially Melbourne which is the State of Art. I understand how you feel but Asian will always be Asian. So nothing much you or I can do to change their mindset. I have done Fashion shoot which the model is barely wearing almost nothing in Australia and everyone was so norm about it. In Singapore, if you have someone wearing slightly less than usual, you can see their tongues wagging. I will stay here for now as my clients still needs me badly.

Good for you. Well being in a fairly conservative country(Singapore), more conservative than China, there are rules we must follow but I sometimes break the rules in order to get the shot done. FHM, Maxim, Cleo and Swimsuit Illustrated are some of the magazines which the Publishing Act in Singapore must still control, although it's imported from overseas.

Well I wish to be in your position as well but due to family and some other commitments, I need to stay here for now. I want to freely express myself too. I am still doing my own series of Black and White, without any anyone interfering about it. I do not think Aussie gals are helpful only but Singapore gals are great to work with. So far I do not have problem working with any models as I love to communicate with human. Local models do come up with creative ideas as well.

I think is better to put a stop here. ProIamge just drop the subjuct, stop to discuss all this before this thread lock my someone. And I think people are more interested on the pictures than all this. I know someone will say my trip no standard, but never mind as long the people who paid for this trip, people who join the trip are happy, cause people who paid for the trip are all my bosses, why I had to worry when all my bosses say good?

I will still plan for the next trip, I will still do it on my own way, I will not force myself to do something that I can't to please someone. I wants to take this opportunity to thanks all the people who always support me. Hope you guys can understand my "powderfull" English.

Thank you!

Well this is internet. There will be no stop from people from commenting about our trip. It's good if they do as we can get some suggestions from those who did not made it. Learning from others is part of life.

If you stop them, it means asking them to go away. So everyone has right to an opinion. It's just a matter of accepting it their opinion. Still welcome all kinds of suggestions from those who has experience in organising excursion trip.

Thank you for the tips and pointers to those who came up with new suggestions.

If anyone who wants to give more suggestions, please go to this thread instead of hijacking Hotspots thread.
