So what's next for DX?

If you scrutinize my post carefully it say "D with 2 digit" not 3 digit ;)
well yes, nothing wrong with having some specs of the 3 digits counterpart, afterall the d80 have been using the pretty similar sensor, af-point and some features as d200. i wun be surprise that they would crippled some of the feature and hardware and squeeze it into a "D with 2 digit" body. this can probably cut down on some R&D and manufacturing process as well due to sharing of parts.

That part no comments as crystal ball can crack or get smash if it becomes too accurate ;p

that's something to what i was thinking about the D80 replacement. oops!

possibly a D???? with D700/D3 sensor at FX format with some of the features chopped selling for $2000-$2200 price bracket.

or a D??/D90 as D80 replacement with D300 DX-format in the $1200-$1400 price bracket.

so the whole body line comes complete:

D60 consumer
D??/D90 replacing the D80 at prosumer level
D300 semi-pro DX format
D2x pro DX format

D???? prosumer FF
D700 semi-pro FF
D3 pro FF

D3x pro FF 24mp and DX 12mp

all these were in my dreams last night as my wife told me this morning. :bsmilie:

Hope it did not wet the bed ;p;p

sorry it should be "D with double digit"

let the film days, F90x and below = amateur, no mirror lock up.

F100,F4, F5, F6= professional, have mirror lock up.

DX becomes amatuer range and FX for pros.( or the rich amatuers)

nikon will keep DX, provided that all other camera companies continue to keep their crop sensor cameras.

this way, FX cameras will have a better price point for them to get a better profit. If DX is gone, there will be a big hole and FX price will have to come down quite alot to fill the hole.

but if just 1 company decided to go all full frame and shift the FF price down 1 scale, competition kicks in and DX will soon follow the exit.

seriously doubt anyone would do that since there is alot of research money that the companys need to earn back.

F100 got mirror lockup? :dunno:

was wondering with all the hype of FF etc..... so what's going to happen to DX? what's the roadmap going to be?

anyone?

A dead end in the (short few) years ahead for DSLRs. It's economics.

aiyo bro, just say lar.... D80X, D85, D85X, D90, D90X.... one of them lor........ with GPS, mobile phone capability, MP3/MP4, wifi, running Symbian....... who still need mobile phone/MP3/MP4 player..... One N (Nikon) will take over the other N (Nokia).... :sticktong

A dead end in the (short few) years ahead for DSLRs. It's economics.

very hard to say in future..... you know this C hook the T, who is the world producer for semicom chip, the K go hook another K and this A very busy go hook the C & K & I.... and the T go hook another C in SEA and we in WWIII...... we all can become war correspondent....

Don't know the C from the T to the K... never mind, too far fetch..... but can be a possibility...

It is not dead, you be surprised.

I see something brewing in the horizon, call "D with 2 digit" in the crystal ball. It is approaching fast and furious and with exciting features somemore.......

...

2-digit? I read its the D80 replacement. All the D300 features but at consumer price! (Lastbolnut will be pleased ;) )

Looks like Nikon will have a killer at every level of the DSLR market.

Hey ever wonder what Nikon will do when they run out of numbers? Will they resort to calling new models as Mark I, Mark II, etc? As in "D9 mark III", etc. :dunno:

the D80 is a D200 with less speed and some other features that consumers don't need
so the D80 replacement .....???

my guess is that we should see a D300 with less speed and some other features that consumers don't need

They will probably use Dx5, Dx01 etc like what they did for the film bodies.

I hear Sept 3 is the date for another set of announcements from Nikon. Might get leaks a week or two before this date.

Some possible upcoming things are

High MP FX (24 MP)
D80 successor (DX)
some prime lenses

pure speculation....

and yes, DX will continue for a while yet... especially if non-bayer technology comes out (this will be the next big thing)

i am actually waiting for a replacement 200mm f4 macro with AF-S and VR

That'd be nice... but I would really like them to re-release the 70-180mm micro-nikkor (which was produced in such low numbers), perhaps updated to constant f/4, even if they only kept it to 1:1.3 mag. (no need, but they will probably add AF-S and VR if they did re-release it). Makes for a light-weight travel telephoto with great macro ability. Combine it with a lightweight DX body with 18-55 VR or 16-85 VR, and you've got a nice lightweight two lens set from wide to telephoto with macro.

The way I see it: the underlying fear is that Nikon would abandon an affordable format and that would leave us stranded with no options but to pay for an expensive set of equipment. I personally dont believe any company would do that.

So, whether there's any future for DX or not is not important. Important is that the equipment remains accessible to us, be it DX or FX :D Better still, FX kit priced at the level of a D40 kit  (Dreaming....)

ah yes, the nikon only zoom macro
a very good point

i actually thing that in future P&S cameras will come with DX sensors

And FX body will have Scene Mode ;p

Yep, that's the next step for P&S. Actually I've read that Nikon conducted some end-user surveys on a possible DX sensor based P&S, whether that translates to an actual product remains to be seen - one reason I was hoping the Sigma DP1 would be successful was that it would encourage other manufacturers to make the step.

But DX will also definitely continue in the lower-cost DSLR segment, which will be the bulk of DSLRs. Nikon is expecting to sell 3 million DSLRs this year, and more than 90% of that is DX. Similar numbers are there on the Canon side - even with 35mm format sensors for a few years now, they still sell over 90% of their DSLRs with APS sized sensors.
