Singapore population to hit 6.9million by 2030

Beware, small islands can tip over when too many people try to stand on it.

From Wiki:

During a House Armed Services Committee hearing in March 2010 concerning the U.S. military installation on the island of Guam, Johnson said to Admiral Robert F. Willard, Commander of U.S. Pacific Command, "My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize", to which Admiral Willard replied, "We don't anticipate that."

That one is one of the Jiak Liao Bee Trios along with Raymond Lim and Wong Kan Seng sitting side by side shaking legs.

Normally they won't even bother the attend parliamentary sittings but now debating the motion of white papers on population so their boss ask them to come and make noise by shooting arrows and throwing smoke bombs.

It is about demographics.
Don't need high level people to write complicated white paper.
Newspapers and magazines have been writing about it, especially in Japan and China .

If I am not mistaken, just saw on TV news that some one actually mentioned in Parliament, to Singaporeans that if they do not want so many immigrants to be allowed into Singapore in future, then they better have more babies. This threat is not in good taste.

There are fundamental and deep seated reasons why less Singaporeans are marrying; and those who do have few or NIL babies.
The white paper seems to miss this; and giving monetary incentive to have babies is barking up the wrong tree. It is almost as silly as giving incentives to men for sterilisation, some time back.

why so excited?

it is only a projection.

from 6.5 to 6.9mil 6.9mil may never come!

Surprisingly, Ah Lian Lily speaks better than some White MPs considering it was her first sitting.

"The settled ones have become less hard-driving and hard-striving"

There are loads of people wanting to get into Singapore. Once the floodgate is opened, there is no way to cry over spilled milk. Also u think our garment will waste time on white paper if they are not going to fill up that projected number?

why dont anybody see the actual root cause? why low birth rate? are they too afraid to address the problem?

if both parents are required to work in order to service the HDB loan then how are they going to manage the baby upbringing efficiently.not everybody has a grandfather/grandmother to help take care ot the baby. not every family can afford maid at home. all parents-to-be are afraid of the expenses like increasing prices of milk powder, diapers, day care, childcare, bringing baby to childcare then to office etc. of course some hardliner would argue that the workforce need these woman back in force.

granting mother 4-6 months maternity leaves is not going to do the magic. the bottom line is if a family is keen to have baby, can the mother or father give up their career for a few years to look after and bring up the baby. if this question is answer, then it could be beneficial .

one scenario, with installment of housing unit and high interest rate, if one family is not able to service a $1000 loan then asking one person to stay at home to take care of baby might not be ok. and the stress builds up and couple would hesitate that

think simple but simple solution is not easy here..

Do we have so many job opening for 7mil ?

knn....where got CAB cost only $8? Even angioplasty costs more than that. I will like to see his bill if he really claims he only paid $8.

Do we have so many job opening for 7mil ?

no. more than half of the population is dormant make up by infant, baby, student, NS, grandpa, grandmum, retiree etc
well the rest need jobs for a living. with decreasing manufacturing jobs, i don't know where the job would come from
shipyard? sales? construction? petrol chemical? transportation? casino?

They need lots of construction workers immediately. Singaporeans want their flats but don't want to carry cement. What to do?
