just how low on the ground did you have to go to shoot that guy blowing the "pipe"?

Yeah, but my lens was short (200mm), not enough reach. Meanwhile, my style is usually more focused on the spectators.

Just above the ground. I shot blindly with a WA lens. Fortunately didn't crop out of the instrument.

Colors kind of dull as compared to yr D60's shots. But you have captured some nice expressions.

Dull? hmm... Some pics are dull in colors due to under the shade, but overall I feel quite similar to my D60 shots, just that 1D's color rendition is more neutral.
