Hi guys!

I'm quite torn between Ricoh GR Digital II and Sigma DP1, though I have read a lot of reviews and spefications on Ricoh GRDII and only a few on Sigma DP1(may be because it is newly released).

It's no doubt that Sigma DP1 render better images than Ricoh GRDII but at a big price difference. In comparison with GRDII, how does Sigma DP1 says about the following:

1.) Black & White setting - GRDII has this option and renders good b&w pics, does DP1 has this?

2.) Macro option

3.) Shutter speed
- GRDII shutter speed range is 180 - 1/2000, for DP1 from what I have seen is 15 - 1/2000 is this true? If it's true, how come it is only limited to 15 seconds.

4.) Wide Converter - GRDII has 21mm wide converter

5.) Focusing - I've seen one forum that he has having some focusing problems on his DP1

DP1 comes in a hefty price, which if I would to purchase GRDII, I could have already a optical viewfinder and wide converter already even lesser at DP1 price. So I was really trying to weigh in everything.

Any inputs would be greatly appreciated. BTW I do have a DSLR, I just want a everyday camera to bring along with me.

Thanks!

Hi guys!

I was wondering you could share your inputs regarding your Sigma DP1, because currently I'm quite confused which one should I buy whether DP1 or Ricoh GR Digital II. I had some concerns listed on this thread:

http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3951271#post3951271

May be you could share some inputs to help me decide better on which one to pursue buying.

Thanks!

I don't have much experience and i only have the GRD1, but i'll give my experiences.

1. The DP1 has b&w mode, but i seldom use it. I get more control manually change from raw to b&w in post processing. (the dp1 doesn't do good jpgs imho)

2. Due to the technicalities, there is no built in macro mode for the DP1, cause the sensor's too big for the lens in that compact body. The closest you can focus is 30cm, but the bokeh's really nice. You can use close up filters/diopters with the additional lens hood (not included). I've see pretty nice results and have ordered myself a set of +1 +2 +4 filters even though i'm not a macro person. But it's extra gear to carry around.

3. Yes it's limited to a max exposure of 15secs. I don't know why. I hope they can 'release' tat in the next firmware update. Also add in some sort of remote release for tat.

4. No wide angle converter for it yet, am not a wide angle person too. I've seen test by others with a range of diff brand converters, but i don't like what i see.

5. Focusing in anything but bright sunlight is slow. 99% of the time i'm on manual focus.

extras: The only thing i like about the GRD is the handling, dp1 is totally different. I'm using the ricoh gv2 ovf with the dp1 and the 4:3 to 3:2 ratio doesn't bother me. The dp1 cost quite alot more than the grd2, but the image it produces is totally different.

Also i don't really like grd's satutated colors. To me personally, the dp1's colors are very much like fuji's NPH, Pro400H, which i normally use. It has this neutral color rendition, to some it's kind of desatuated, but its very hard to achieve it by desat'ing it in photoshop or other softwares.

To me the GRD is like shooting with Fuji's Superia, velvia or sensia. The dp1 is towards the NPH film.

I too have a dslr which i hardly touch after i've gotten my dp1. When i had my GRD, i didn't felt that ease to not have my dslr with me.

Cheers

Hi intosite for a very insightful input.

But I'm a little bit confused, you said you only had a GRD1? Or you also have DP1 but you don't have GRDII?

Regarding the bokeh, I was really quite surprise how DP1 f4 bokeh outshines GRDII f2.4 bokeh, there's really a big difference, DP1 produce better bokeh.

I'm waiting for GRDII users here to defend their toy hehehe. May be there's a significant improvement from GRD to GRDII.

Thanks!

i'm sure DP1 will have better bokeh than GRD I or II, GX100, or any other compact camera. due to sensor size differences

sorry to be a little confusing, i have both the grd1 n dp1. i don't own a grd2.

i think the grd2 has quite a bit of improvement over the grd1. but didn't warrant me to spend 1k on almost the same thing, so might as well try out something different.

and i use my grd1 for some jobs fairly abit, so i got the dp1 cause i was after dslr quality outputs for my final pics.

I only have the GRD2 but not the DP1. Like you guys, I have DSLRs but prefer to carry the GRD2 with me at all times.

Just want to mention a couple of thing about the GRD2.

For me, its lack of "good" bokeh has sort of forced me to approach my photo opportunities differently. Instead of putting up with a so-so background, I have ditched the f/2.8 as much as permissible and concentrated on its sweet spot of f/6.3. As this would mean that every element in the picture would become relatively sharp, this has forced me to pay more attention to composition and how these elements would interact with each other. I find that I still have a lot to learn as far as composition is concerned.

The other thing is black & white. I shoot them in raw and do the conversion in pp. This gives me more control. If you like the mood that gritty and grainy b&w images can offer, ISO 400 / 800 on the GRD2 can produce some very nice grain.

Just received my set of Hoya +1 +2 +4 filters off ebay.
Did some test shots, do note i'm doing macro for the first time.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/intosite/sets/72157604668638122/

All taken with 3 stacked on each other, then onto the UV filter i have on the lens hood, which i think caused the vignetting. will have to experiment more.

Also seems a little tad soft, not sure it's the glass quality. i've seen other better macro with filters on the dp1 on flickr. so could be the filters i've got. but i aint complaining since it's only 20+sgd.

I guess the images are really good considering it is coming from a small camera :D

@osocan
I actually saw the direct comparison of GRDII and DP1 images side by side from one article and I'm really quite impress with the bokeh of DP1 @ f4 against GRDII f2.4 wherein there's no bokeh at all.

Even at f/2.4, everything would be "in focus" from about 4m onwards when set at hyperfocus. Given that the DP1 has a bigger sensor, it's understandable that it'll have a narrower DOF.

Latest update on price? Maybe getting it.... Where got stocks?? Thks!

S$1500 for what is supposedly a digicam with a dSLR-sized sensor and fixed lens with a f/4 aperture seems pretty expensive.

Ya u are right....wun be buying...thks.:D

I think it is a wonderful camera for holidays. :D I like the internal flash compensation very much, fill in flash outdoors with a -1EV and more setting gives very natural looking light on subjects.

I just bought mine @ MS colour. Price wise, i would say it's not the est but i have 2 years warrenty and a 4gb lexar high speed card.
I'll get some test shot up aspa.

My only complain - no acr support for DP1. fiarck!

p.s. I wanted to get gr2 but i itchy hand and ask for dp1 to try out.

Was at SAM yesterday. Didn't plan to shoot, but might as well since i was there and had the DP1. I was pleasantly surprised to see this in SAM. oh was fortunate to have a +4 macro filter with me too.

Where did you get the adpater hood and for how much? I might be going to Japan in 2 weeks time, thinking of buying one of these adpaters to take some occassional closeups. Just wished that a 40mm equivalent was around, :p
