Sigma DP-1

This is not even close to a Leica.... It doesn't have the IR issue, banding and purple fringing plus the very high price tag!

I must say I was very interested in this, till the price was revealed... The low noise capability is not very good as well.

from the review in dpreview, the dynamic range of the DP1 is pretty astounding especially from Raw files.

I am also very surprised by how good it is after shooting with my SD14 in Japan. There isn't really a single scene which I find that the SD14 cannot handle. Even back lit subjects are pretty good.

Quick question for dp1 user.

I'm fairly interested to get 3rd party flash unit for my dp1. I have a old vivitar flash head but i'm aware of the voltage issue.

Is there any good recommendation for it?

From an image perspective, the only problem I feel is obvious is the way reds are handled. But here is a link on a very useful tip on how it can be corrected. I have not tried it myself though.

don't know about dp1, but the SD14 has problems with correct color when shooting raw and developing with sigma raw software using the auto WB settings. you have to color correct each photo individually. not a problem for amateur shooters like me but for people who shoot a LOT, I think it is probably a deal breaker unless you know how to create a custom raw profile and use ACR. but using ACR you loses the fill light ability which I think is really one of the best "HDR" tool I have seen. very natural in mapping the highlights and shadows.

Get my Panasonic flash, guaranteed to work with the DP1.

Beautiful, look like scanned from film.

i was planning on getting the dp1 but when i read about it being really slow it put me off. Any first hand experience?

Went to CP and try, focusing abit slow....no zoom...

I was wondering could it be any slower than Canon 300D? I'm quite used with the write speed of Canon 300D, so if DP1 is as slow as Canon 300D I think, I would be fine.

I think the DP1 will be fine for Sony R1 users because the focussing speed, write times and picture quality feels familiar. Compared to DSLRs, everything will feel slower, but you do get fabulous picture quality. Slow focussing can be overcome by the use of manual focus. I don't want to comment about write times because it never bothered me, but I have a suspicion that it will bother some other people. All said, I feel that the DP1 is meant for people who place emphasis on portability and image quality over everything else.

Curious, how about the manual focus? I mean if it's a fix lens I would not mind mf at all as long as the mechanics is good. I heard it's on the body somewhere... but where?

If you look carefully, beside the function dial... It's just beside it. It has the range indication and hell if you are good with judging distance of your object. It can be very accurate.
I have very good results with manual focus, practise makes the difference.

MF is by means of the thumb wheel at the top of the camera behind the shutter button in the photo above.

Thanks for the offer. I might pass it first. Until the proviso about trigger voltage is released, I'm still sketical about 3rd party flash head.

For now, I only narrow down to the dp1 optional flash or sigma 500 super

I was wondering if anyone has any feedback on the optional optical viewfinder, does it show any additional information and focus points etc etc etc? I first I thought it was only an electronic viewfinder.

@intosite
huwow never thought that nikon sb800 would work fine on dp1, how bout canon flashes?

the optical viewfinder is used just for framing.. for me, it actually makes the whole feel of taking photos different.. btw i got the ricoh gv2 and used with it.. don't really feel much diff between the 4:3 and 3:2 ratio of the gv2 to the dp1's 3:2... also ppl tend to think you're using some old camera.. which works for me..
so basically it's just frame lines.. i can't comment on the sigma's vf, but the gv2 seems as bright as my leica m6.

as for the canon flashes.. i'm no sure.. as long it has the auto mode, it should be fine. read up about the auto mode, cause some older flashes, only allows a prefix apeture n iso, unlike modern ones where you can key in wat you're using.
