umm guys..

can anyone roughly tell me wads the diff between 30mm & 50mm f1.4?

i'm planning to buy my sigma by yr-end..using mainly for portraits(half body to full body)~

Well, 30mm is much wider than 50mm...

I wish for this lens. Anyone going to HK anytime soon? Also, Adorama.com is selling at less than SGD600 incl. shipping. Quite tempted, but with grey sets, warranty issues and all, is it worth it?

Artworkfoto selling grey sets @ $590, warranty with their shop. But i check the last 2 piece a few weeks back but both lenses are bias to front focusing... In the end got local set for $720. $130 for for 2/5 years warranty. It's your call.

Since you are thinking about getting a grey set, must check first since there is this known issue with this lens.

Also to add, if you like to take pics across the dinner table (normal makan 1-1 dining table in restaurants). You can't really use the 50mm as you need to push back the chair/arch back to get the subject in frame.

I really love this lens, i.e. Sigma 30mm f1.4. I had been living under the impression that it was a FF lens until when I plug it onto my FX, I realised: ALAMAK! It's DX... Sian half... :bsmilie: hahaha...

You can try the Nikon AF-S 35/1.8 DX on a FX body esp for weddings, the vignetting is not too bad. The Sigma 50/1.4 is a full frame lens.

Here's a video taken with a D3S with a 35/1.8.

The local sets are good quality? You tried? They let you try it in their shop?

I tk grey or local also got lemon ones lying around... With the amount of focusing issues, i too bought the local set for peace of mind...

i'm aware of these focusing issues, seems to be quite commonplace and alot of people seem to kena. i'm thinking of asking a friend in hk to buy back from Tin Cheung for me, but I believe it won't have warranty right? besides i hear the focusing issues not covered under warranty anyway + sigma service here not great either right? abit off-putting.. but i'm still pretty keen to get the lens.. what do you guys think

As mentioned by Kingpin8, neither local nor grey may have this problems as it's still manufacture from the only factory in Japan. Best to test before you purchase.

Yes they allowed me to test, just tell them you wanna get but you would like to test if their lens/lenses are having this front/back focusing problem.

Happen to check out this lens at Best Denki today and this lens is priced at SGD950++. WTF? Is Best Denki one of the worst place to shop for electronics or what? Shop here sure kana conned + chopped.

Check out the forum's B&S section. Got some used lens up for grabs. Mine is for sale too. :bsmilie:

thanks for the feedback..but if i really were to get 50mm instead of 30mm..that would probaby serve as 'future-proofing', in case i intend to switch to FF..?

Can be consider a future proof but what is important is what you need now.

30mm on crop can take full length portrait
50mm on crop is like for half portrait

For me I think it is buying what you need NOW rather than future proof. If not maybe the lens that you bought might not be the right focal length you need now.

Just called up sigma svc centre. It seems like they no longer do calibration for free. Was told to bring all proof of purchase and have to pay 80 bucks for it if I don't have it.

Seems abit inconsistent with what I gathered from this thread.
I just sent in my lense for calibration. The lady clarified the matter with me. She said that if you buy from authorise dealer the calibration will be done free, if not $80. The same applies to both local and overseas purchase. She said a lot of guys have been buying from Tin Cheung camera, it is not an authorised agent. Showed me many other receipts all from Tin Cheung, some buy 10 of the same lense. So they have to charge. I guess when people try to make money of out buying cheaper in Hkg and reselling here, they have no choice but to charge cos they end up with some many more lenses to calibrate. Too bad...

Emailed Sigma Service Centre a month ago, seems like calibration (without existing warranty) is no longer free, like what Canonballer said.

I can answer the first part of your question: Yes, you can use it for your 50D, but be sure to buy the Canon-mount... :bsmilie:

I believe only you can answer the 2nd part of your question.

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 = prime lens, excellent in low-light performance but not easy to use due to narrow depth of field
Sigma/Canon 24-70 f/2.8 = zoom lens, a good walkabout for full frame, but usually not wide enough (for most users) to be considered a general walkabout lens on an APS-C sensor.

People usually compare:
Sigma 30mm f/1.4 vs. Canon 35mm f/1.4 or Canon 50mm f/1.4 &
Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 vs. Canon 24-70 f/2.8 or Canon 17-55 f/2.8

Hope this helps to clarify the direction of your question =)
