totally agree. prime lens is good to use but the only thing is u need to change lens.

just some updates for those who are interested to get this lens overseas. I called up sigma service centre and was informed that the service charge for calibrating the lens if you bought from overseas is $150.

They will only waived it if you can prove that you purchased the lens from a authorised distributor. The warranty card must be stamped with the distributor stamp and not a dealer stamp. Not sure what's the difference though.

i dont own this lens at the moment yet, just doing some homework first:bsmilie:

At what setting did you snap that picture? ... handheld rite ... ?

Hi guys, :D

I am now considering the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 & the Canon 35mm f/2.0

Previously, I was using the 50mm f/1.8 II but was not satisfied thus, few days ago, I sold it off and got a 85mm f/1.8 USM for a faster focusing and a longer reach.

Now, I am thinking the 30-35mm range prime to complete my setup, thus I was thinking between the Sigma and the Canon.

And as this is my first time purchasing a Sigma, I was thinking whether the focusing on this 30mm 1.4. Users, please do share with me.

Nonetheless, thanks in advance! :D:D

i got both lenses.. for night performance the sigma is slightly better as in AF speed and sharpness.. But for day shot the 24mm wins hands down... I got many keepers for sigma 30mm but very very less on the 24mm.. perhaps i am a newbie thats why:bsmilie:

Brudder, wait wait.... I am talking about the new Nikkor AF-S 24mm f1.4, the one with nano coating.

You have this? This Nikkor is supposed to be AF much better than the Sigma 30/1.4, which you can easily see at the bigger apertures like f1.4-2.8 range even for pretty static objects.

Edit : Found your posts in the 24/1.4 thread @ Nikon forum. How come and what do you mean when you said you have many keepers for the 30/1.4 at night? I am more for AF accuracy than speed.
I believe I have a lot of experience with the 30/1.4, shd be like > 100k frames on it already.....so pretty familiar with what it can and cannot do. My main usage would be under ballroom low-light conditions.

Appreciate your input before going down to the shops to test.

Yea i have both lenses.. the sigma is slightly more sharp and the WB is more accurate then the 24mm F1.4 for low light shots.. I am using Fujifilm S5pro and D300 to compare. But for day shots the nikkor 24mm is the better one in term of sharpness from center to corners of the frame. This is from my own experience using both lenses.. do rent both lenses to do yr own conclusion.

Try to get one still with warranty so you can bring it back to Sigma to calibrate. Perfect focus on the seller's body doesn't mean it will be perfect on yours. In most cases, its always best to recalibrate.

alternatively... get a body with micro adjustment function..

hi can anyone advise if i purchase a local set but the warranty is over, will sigma service center still charge you for calibration or will it be free of charge?

Just got the lens and called up for calibration, got slot on 16th Nov....thats so long.... :S

Hope it works wonder when its done.

I took the plunge and got myself the Sigma 30mm F1.4. The F1.4 is too tempting. It is my first third party lens. Sad to say, I have to visit Sigma service center very soon. Although I have brought my body to test, I only managed to get a better set. Did not realize I had back focusing problem, as when I tested my copy it look sharp on the LCD. Sigma 30mm is known to have the front/back focusing issue and forumers here recommend to have calibration done after purchasing the lens. Hopefully after calibration, I will have a sharp copy.
