What mount? I know John 3:16 has one more copy of Canon mount that's quite sharp, but you got to stop down to f/2.2 or 2.5 to get better sharpness across the frame. Centre is amazing wide open. If Nikon mount, I think they're bringing it in soon. Other mounts not so sure.

nikon mount. So in general this lens must stop down to at least f/2.2 to be sharp across the frame? Paisae but how close can this lens focus to take a photo ah?

Not sure, but you can check this page. I can check with Samuel as to when the Sigma can come in, then I'll let you know.

make sure u zoom in 100% to check its sharpness..

hmm didnt know that f2.2 is sharpest throughout the frame..

No it's not the sharpest. Please go read my post again. I said it's the best setting to at least get sharpness across the frame.

Hi all

From all the pics i see, there seems to be little background blur even if its wide open.

Is my observation correct?

Regards

wat do u mean little background blur ?

i mean the subjest is sharp while background blur...paiseh me quite newbie, hehe

that is call bokek, normal if you shoot wide open. but if you shoot at F8 then it should be sharp across

Hi cichlid - people pay top $$$ to buy the best lenses to get this sweet smmoth deliciously aesthetic "background blur" aka bokeh. :D no worries mate...me newbie too and have made many such faux pas! welcome to the club! :)

haha..:bsmilie: its bokeh alright...but my question is still not been answered. All the sample pics here like no bokeh leh...am i right?

Bokeh depends on a few factors.

Perhaps the first thing you will need to understand is "How to achieve bokeh". This have been explained many times. Do a search and you will be able to find the answers.

Cheers

bokeh needs not only wide aperture like f1.4 or f2.8 but also focul length.. more tele the bokeh is better.. best portraits lens like 85mm f1.4 can give u the best bokeh... for a 30mm lens.. that's the best u can get..

ok , that answered my question, thanks

anyone tried mounting this on a full frame or 1.3x crop yet? Does it work, and how bad is the vignetting especially on a 1.3x? Thinking of getting one, but i'm going to move back to a 1.3x body soon.

My question - on a scale of 10 how would a 50mm f1.8 compare with this lens? I know the prices are so different and hence obviously the performance has to be vastly superior. But would this sigma 1.4 deliver say 4Xtimes better pic quality than say a 50mm f1.8 coz the price is almost 4Xtimes higher too! Just wondering is one selected the 1.8 then how much of a compromise would it be? Cheers.

frankly, the comparison between the 30 f1.4 and the 50 f1.8 is like apples and oranges. 2 different types of lens.

30mm is more of a wide angle lens wherelse the 50mm is semi-portrait.

Try this lens for comparison: 35mm F2 :)

thanks sniperD. will look up the 35mm f2. Err...if not too much trouble can u explain to me the meaning of a "wide angle" lens and a "semi-portrait or portrait" lens? I keep hearing these definitions and wonder what they really mean...in lay man terms...

Cheers mate!

i have tried the 35mm f2.. the only disadvantage is the aperture.. sigma only wins it by the wider aperture.. colour wise.. as usual sigma is warmer..
