Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports

Manfrotto 501 502 504 and 509 heads all use the same plates. They are not acra swiss compatible. But they are quite standard in the video industry. The same plates can be used for Sachtler FSB6 and FSB8. We usually get long plates with a stabilizer lock to the camera body.

With Sachtler FSB6T, FSB8T (every model with a T at the end) and DV10, they use a different mini plate. Balance is achieved by a sliding mechanism in the top of the fluid head.

For a tamron 156 or sigma 156, fsb8 will be overkill. FSB8 is capable of holding the 400/2.8 at any angle you stop at even with the counter balance spring set at only 4. For tamron 156 a manfrotto 502 will be enough. For the sigma 156s, the manfrotto 504 will be enough. The manfrottos are very value for money. Once you move up to sachtlers the cost jumps exponentially.

Yes, The sachtlers look bit overkill for me :P I'm considering the manfrotto 504.

The only consideration now is plate. I have arca-swiss plates on my camera/lens (156s, 200/4) and on my monopod/mini-tripods now, and wonder if its a good idea to put an arca-swiss clamp on the 504PLONG plate, or remove the arca-swiss plates and mount the lens directly on the plate for a more secure grip.

Just wondering if getting a contemporary version of 150-600mm using EF to E-mount adaptor on A6000 will I get phase detection and contrast detection autofocus or just the same autofocus detection with LE AE4 adaptor?

The adapter's AF system should override the camera's own AF system unless you're using LAEA1 or LAEA3. If you were using LAEA4 then you would get the phase detection AF from LAEA4 instead of the a6000's hybrid AF.

I'd hence hazard a guess that if you were to use the EF to E mount adapter, you'd get pretty slow (but accurate) AF. I would dampen my own expectations if I were you. It would be better to see the Sigma as a 150-600mm MF lens for birding with the AF as a bonus. Still a pretty cheap 600mm MF lens imho.

Alternatively, do consider getting the A-mount version if there is one, to use with the LAEA4. I am using the Tamron 150-600 with LAEA4 on my Nex 6 (and a77ii) and getting pretty decent results (image quality and AF) and overall usage experience.

thanks man! But don't think they be releasing a sigma C 150-600 for A-mount

I saw your FSB8 feeling tempting..lol
not sure if Cartoni can hold up to it or the latest RRS one.

Very painful when buying bro... and wait for it in sg is 4 weeks. Only fsb6/T is ready stock.

I went thru the same process. In the end if you want stability, avoid multiple plates. And we do not use the default plates that come with the 504. We order custom long plates from dpowers or marsace. I think sirui makes one too.

I think the 504hd is also a little overkill for you too. 502 should be enough. One thing to consider when getting fluid heads, is if you are going to get flat base or bowl base. Most of us get bowl base. You will need a systematic type tripod to accomodate these heads. Note that 502 and 504 comes with 75mm bowl. 509 comes with 100mm bowl.

Hi, thinking of getting either the Sigma 156c or Tamron 156.. How about the Manfrotto 500? Price wise it looks like a cost friendly alternative to the 502 or 504?

Finally got time to take the lens out for a nature walk. The quality doesn't disappoint, autofocus speed is fast (adjustable), good bokeh, and there's good sharpness across the frame.

All shot with Sigma 150-600 Sports with Nikon D7200 (Great combination here.. metering on the D7200 tends to overexpose compared to my D810.. but its a camera issue)

All SOOC JPEG. No RAW support on DXO Optics Pro yet

The 500's counter balance is fixed. So it is either on or off. Counterbalance weight is also low at only 2.4kg. Drag is also fixed, so there is only one level of drag.

Not recommended even though it is cheap. 502 is already very cheap for a birding setup, i would recommend that as a bare minimum if you are using a light setup.

The 504 is minimum if you are using a 328 or lens of similar weight. Take note that weight of.the Sigma 156s is already the weight of a 328. When i was using 328 plus TC and cam, i am already maxed out on counterbalance weight at level 4. Even at level 4 (7.5kg counterbalance weight) my setup is still not holding as well as i hoped. I still need to half lock using the tilt lock to add more friction. And when it hits a certain angle, the setup will not hold and go down/up.

The 509 is the next logical choice and it is strongly spec'ed. Problem is 509 comes only with 100mm bowl.version and my setup is 75mm only. And the 509 is physically huge.

Anyone tried the Sigma TC-1401 1.4x TC on the Sigma 150-600 Sports yet ? I've only seen canon mount versions in stock though.

The dilemna of which TC to buy. I'm worried if i get the TC-1401 for the Sigma 150-600s, it wouldn't work on the nikon 300mm/f4 pf. So will wait for more reviews

Alfie, not enough reach ah?? Haha. If really want to get, get the 1.4x. Dun get the 2x, AF might suffer.

Btw, the TC for canon u quoted it's from Sigma? 1.4x or 2x?

Yeah, I be getting the 1.4x which can AF and has only very slightly quality degradation.. 600mm x 1.4tc x 1.5tc = 1260mm :P

Yes, Orient Photo had one piece of the Sigma TC-1401 for Canon mount (1.4x)

Yes, TC-1401 is weather resistant too to complete the whole sports WR design :)

I didn't ask coz it was for Canon :P Just give them a ring.

Hi, I think the price hover around 2.4~2.5k. Better call to check as they usually out of stock.

Cheers!

Sharing few more shots with this lens ;)

Checked with a few shops regarding pricing, Sport Version - S$2,488, Contemporary Version - S$1,488; all shops quoted the same price as the prices are currently controlled by Sigma.

Currently the Sport Version is out of stock, please let me know if anyone has spotted one (for canon mount).

By the way, do you think it is worth getting the Sport Version which is $1k more than the Contemporary Version? Should I wait or just get the Contemporary Version straight away? I worry that I might regret later on.
