Here's a few shots of my new year's day visit to Hachiman-gu Shrine in Kamakura. This is the biggest and most important shrine in Kamakura and a very popular destination for "hatsumode".

Legacy Pro 400
Summicron 35mm f2 ASPH
Leica M7

The white rope is raised and the masses move slowly forward toward the shrine. There were two rope controls along the path to the outer altar of the shrine, and the line of people stretched about 500 metres in length at its peak.

I just make it before the rope is dropped to stop people climbing the steps with this batch of people. What a crowd.

The next batch of people awaits patiently behind the rope before it is lifted and they can climb the steps to the outer altar. The line of people stretches way off into the distance behind the building.

This is the outer altar of the shrine, and final destination for most of the people waiting in line. People pray here for good fortune in the new year, then get moved off to the side so the next batch of people can climb the steps and have their turn.

After praying at the shrine's outer alter, a girl purchases a good luck charm for the new year. Naturally, a good luck charm from the shrine is only valid for one year, so you have to buy a new one each year. Quite a good business mode for the shrine, eh. And of course tax free income for the shrine ;-)

These pictures make me recall my recent trip to Gion..my friend and I were queueing at a shrine for our turn to ring the bell and make our wishes...and we were rehearsing and trying hard to recall the steps....
1) Ring the bell
2) toss a coin
3) clap twice
4) bow

and when its our turn...we did everything in a wrong sequence and forgot about ringing the bell...i think the jap behind us was giggling ....

I tot i should take a pic of her...and im glad, im fast enough for the focus...

Congrats on your new RF! Love the light in the first one.

this is a super shot of the crowd, in the midst of the crowd... was this taken overhead? or were you at the bottom of the steps?

Thanks CJ :)
I was at the bottom of the stairs just about to start the climb up to the top.

nice... what film did you use?

oh... heh... believe it or not, i bought those Lomo films, rated at ISO800, from ruby. i am actually quite surprise the film does give pretty good punchy colours. :)

!!! ISO 800 film that gives decent grain and sharpness. I have to try :P

the packaging looks something like this
http://singapore.shop.lomography.com/films/lomography-film/lomography-color-negative-800-pack-of-3

unfortunately, ruby only sells 35mm for this. i'm looking ard for the 120 format to use in my mamiya 7II.
There is that shop not far from Chiif... called Peek!

Ah I found a link that lists all the lomo shops in Singapore. Maybe you could try? Lomography Shops in Singapore - The Analog Dork

thanks!!

actually, i didn't had high hopes for this film. bought it on a lark to try out something new. looks like this might become my staple film for the M7...

then again, when all the stars are aligned, you can't really get a sucky pic on a M7... :bsmilie:
