Great Stuff!! and a good writeup!!

Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi

The lake itself is really nothing spectacular, imagine one of Singapore's little reservoirs with a quaint temple planted in the middle.
Its perimeter is littered with park-benches and willowy trees, and all you need is about 30 minutes to circumambulate the entire lake.

The main attraction, for me at least, were the folks around the lake and their fascinating myriad of activities.

In the wee hours of the morning, before the sun rises and the work day begins is when the area goes into an exercise frenzy.

In one corner you would see the men lifting primitive-looking stone-weights with grunts and gusto within their open-air gym.
You would come across old men performing unbelievable feats of calisthenics; doing sky-high leg kicks or repeatedly banging their heads against the benches.

The older ladies would be moving through a set of tai-chi movements, or lining up to massage each others back.
Further down are some middle-age ladies twisting their hips so vigorously that I just had to look away.

By night fall, young lovers would have filled the benches, looking some measure of privacy among the low-hanging branches.
Streets vendors would lay out their mats on the ground for their patrons to sit upon and have a snack by the lake.

Their fondness for this seemingly lackluster lake is apparent, I guess its more symbolic than scenic, also the lake is smack in the center of Hanoi.
Lastly, it is probably the one single quiet spot in whole of hectic Hanoi.

If you are ever in Hanoi, spend some time at the lake. Try to get there before sunrise - you are bound to be awed!

A friend needed carpets to furnish his new house, so naturally I suggested Arab Street.

The nice Iranian fellow, Ebrahim, was very generous with his knowledge.
He talked about the different weaves, techniques, materials.
He explained the differences between Turkish, Iranian, Persian and Chinese carpets.

He even showed me a flatweave carpet that was created by interlocking warp and weft threads.
Some of the embroidery - all done by hand according to him - are truly stunning.

I asked him about his competitors, seeing that there are so many stores hawking the same wares.
Taking the liberty to paraphrase him, he essentially replied that he does not give a damn.
In any Iranian market, there are 10,000 stores selling carpets, so Arab Street is peanuts.

Good stuff Phil.

Good short documentation & interaction with your subject. Something very less seen in the street scene here in CS.

I look forward to more.

Let me know if you wanna feature any of your pictures as a single or photo essay on RFSG, I'll sort you out.

Had a short 1 hour window to walk around during a recent business trip to Jakarta. Just nearby the big shopping malls and hotels, I walked along streets away from the shopping malls, in hope to find a less common sight.
Here, with a few simple assembly and a business idea, many are seen setting up stalls selling a range of products from food(very delicious looking indeed) to pre-paid mobile cards.
I chance upon this guy in the smallest of stalls/setup, not exactly comfortable to my views however, it's something he got going.....

Catering to local needs, I stumble upon many local vegetable vendors pushing their carts from door to door selling fresh ingredients for home cooking.
While most sold vegetables, some did go with the additional spread of fish and even meat. Seasoning and spices were among the other complimentary items sold.
Here in the picture, a lady patiently awaits for the seller to pack her order at the comfort and safety of her house fence.

Nice series Cairocks!

I love the feel, conjures quite the stirring imagery of loneliness and abandonment.
The earthy tones of the first few images work very well.
However, I think the last image doesn't really fit - if it were mine, I'd trim the last frame out of this mini-series.
Just my 1cent's worth.

Thanks Thedraperyfalls for your comment.:D I included the last shot cus the sign was almost fully surrounded by vegetation and there are no birds or humans around to make it relevant anymore. Think the pic did not bring out that feel.:( On hindsight, I should have put in another shot of an abandoned playground instead.
