yes the problem is we all dont come into photography together diff age diff people come into CS everytime you dont expect everyone to know whats happening the least you can do is link them to previous threads and not screw them

That's why the search button is there, for people to access to information previously discussed. It takes initiative to learn and if you can't even take the first step, forget it.

i understand what you guys mean sometimes we are just lazy i know but some people just dont know how to put things nicely and this "screw the newbie" how will us newbies will want to go for outings and learn more from you guys with sure arrogant pros around i rather dump my camera just ignore us newbies so pros when you see thread with pointless questions let me teach you a new combination key its called ALT F4

First: Could you please include a few more commas and periods? Would make your posting easier to read and it voids misunderstandings.
A good question will give useful answers. What is a good question then? It shows that the asking person has already started thinking about the problem, has tried to find answers or tried to figure out how things work. Asking questions should also include what has been done already (research, thinking, trial and error, reading manuals[!]) - this will provide enough information for the helping person. How many times we have seen postings about "all blur blur" or "too dark" but never seen any picture uploaded? That's like asking a doctor on the phone about stomach pain. Every respectable doctor will deny any advice but say "I need to see you, please come around."
Of course there are these people saying "If you don't like the question just ignore it." - My answer is "If you post into a public forum be prepared for all kinds of answers. If you don't like this just don't post."

...Actually, the internet is so huge now, the chance of ANY question, regardless of it being from a newbie or a an expert, that has not been discussed somewhere on the internet before, is really slim.

Should we then request everyone to google their question first before posting it here in CS?

So, as a moderator, my answer to your poll is to give the newbie a gentle reminder that the question/topic has been discussed before. No need to be cold and harsh.

:)

well said.
noobs - don't be afraid to ask, don't let the arrogant/cynical/pompous intimidate you. especially for those who are making the jump from P&S to DSLRs or unfamiliar with photographic principles/DSLR functions. this forum is called Clubsnap, not "Professional Snappers Club". in fact, i've come across working professionals in forums with not an ounce of arrogance that some hot-headed "foot stompers" and "i'll-tell-you-what-you-need-&-don't-need" forummers spew out at noobs on a regular basis. as summed up above, "no need to be cold and harsh".

Hello all. I am a newbie and I have a question. Pardon me if it sounds silly: My uncle recently passed me his Nikon D70, and I have trouble finding the latch to open the camera back to load my roll of film. Can anybody help me?

:bsmilie:

But seriously folks,

Why get so agitated? Especially if it's found in the newbie's sub-section. If I think I can't be bothered to answer the question, then I won't even go and view the thread in the first place. Take it easy, no need to stress.

asking question is not a bad thing do some of you go to school what do you do in sch listen to the teacher crap and head to your computer or libary to search? or do you ask how i wish the teacher says this screw you newbie read your books

I can imagine a literature class ...

"Teacher, how do I learn to read and write?"
"Teacher, what brand of pencil should I buy?"
"Teacher, how do I sharpen a pencil correctly?"
"I managed to sharpen a pencil, can an expert/pro tell me how to improve?"
"Teacher, can you summarize Hamlet for me? I'm too lazy to read it myself."

I probably said this before.

Everybody is ignorant.

Only that they are ignorant about different things.

Ask a brain surgeon how to play a didgeridoo. Maybe he cannot.

Ask a top chef how to fly a fighter jet.

lol, I seen this before in CS, "XXX camera manual too thick, I'm too busy has no time to read, can someone summarize it for me?"

anyway, most CSers are very helpful, willing to share what they know,
but sometime, we encounter some people come in just ask a very general question, like
"how to shoot a wedding? any tips?"

alamak, how to answer this question?
for this question, so many books has been written, so many sites has lots of information, even CS here also have so many threads discussing the same topic,

so what the thread starter really want?

a super charge crush course in 10mins, plus one quick fix all situation setting, with ultimate camera mouthed a pow sua pow hai lens?

one quick fix all situation setting, with ultimate camera mouthed a pow sua pow hai lens?

Wah, nt bad, if got such a thing tell me ok, i wanna buy. haha, but on the otherhand, if got such a thing would clubsnap exist till today? i guess probably not.

(this part onwards is general statement arh, nt for catchlight alone arh)
this is a place for every photographer(be it new or pro) to aft all, discuss the problems they hav in photography and see if others got similar prob or not, if yes, prehaps can come tgt derive solution(sound so math). some ppl even come here chill out relax abit, see some interesting photographs by ppl who share the same passion.

i'm sure u guys only come here when u r free right? u dun come here when u know u still got that never ending report to write. so, since its a place for ppl to come n u know relax themselves, or help others abit(doing gd deed), why make the environment so tense? jus relax lor and seek peace(as if all the crap u hav to put up with ur boss in the day is nt enuf). Aft all, crap here can be ignored if u dun like, but u can't possibly ignore ur boss right? The ability to be able to ignore is a blissing, cherish it. But the act to help others will always be appreciated.

I will direct the newbie to where the answer(s) can be found.
Strictly no spoon-feeding

Be proactive, and you will be rewarded with good results. Well at least you will appreciate the new knowledge gained.

But i'm against screwing the newbie upside down. There's no point to treat each other with hostility.
If the pro is willing share and impart knowledge, then do so in a friendly manner - it's a help after all. If the pro is not willing to share, then just keep quiet. What for be a sadist?

it is sometimes a gamble who we lend our hand for help. sometimes, it is not even appreciated. I received pm in the past asking for this and that on certain topics (ie ezema). After typing a lengthy reply (both pm & open post) to a few individuals, some appreciated, but some, not a word of acknowledgment or just a simple smile icon. I end up deleting those info as i do not want to be involved anymore in those conversations.

Perhaps it just like giving charity: do not expect anything back as you type into cyberspace. The details can fall into someone's black hole.

times have changed...
there seem to be a trend that most people just want short-cuts for everything they do.

agree. sometimes the newbie doesnt quite know how to use the search tools and go around the different parts of the forum. the least one can do is to direct the newbie to where he should go to.

There is a general consenses about spoon feeding being unhealthy passive learning process. and there issn't much space for arguements against that. I am not for spoon feeding either.

But one could be generous enough to render proper feedback and guidance. There are many more palatable ways of putting it across that the search is just one click away, rather than having incite more flame and hate downstream. Do we need to Screw the fella in Option 3 that screwed the bugger in the first place or are we just asking for it.

I think it many are actually nice people when meeting in real person say on a gathering. Probably people behave differently on forums.

Ryan

I liken this scenario to the issue being discussed.
If you see a beggar on the street asking for a handout (spood feeding), do you:
A) give the beggar some money?
B) ignore the beggar and walk away?
C) beat the beggar up for being lazy, blocking your way/taking up your time?
I see this type of "cyber bullying" very prevalent in forums nowadays because of the impersonal nature of cyberspace. I'd like to see those self-righteous "newbie screwers" do action "C" above the next time they see a beggar on the street (and take photos of it!)

The teacher/student example above is somewhat flawed. Teachers are paid to teach. If they encounter students who are far below the intellect level of their peers (and asking silly pencil questions), they should refer the student to special education with teachers who are paid to give that sort of education so the rest of the students are not affected. Nobody is paying these "newbie screwers" to come here to lecture newbies. This forum caters to photogs of varying levels of experience so some amount of tolerance is necessary. If newbies post threads in the wrong (pro only) categories, perhaps the moderators can move those threads to the newbie category so as not to infuriate the "pros"?

I am too imperfect to judge other's imperfections. I've always been taught, if I have nothing good to say, then don't say anything at all. Be a peace maker, but failing that, at least try not to be a war monger.

Just wondering, when somebody posts a question about lenses/cameras that have been asked many times before, what would you do?

Your question's a bit arrogant? What's obvious to you might not be obvious to someone else.

How does a newbie know that the question has been asked many times before? Searching doesn't always pull up the answers.

In any case, each time an 'old' question gets asked, there's a good chance someone will come with a new idea which could be useful to everybody.

And, if you think a question's too boring, just ignore the thread.

If every new person who joined the forum is scared that some pompous established member is going to jump on them for asking 'old' questions, there won't be many new members. I hate self-appointed forum-police.

i will be more then glad if everyone is like you. but the fact is that there are people that start threads like these

Tim, if I did not misread your posts, you might have misunderstand thengz. I think he is on the same page. Search up some of his recent posts and you'll see.

but sometime, we encounter some people come in just ask a very general question, like

alamak, how to answer this question?

Fur a general question, a Pro will answer it with a general answer:

"Normally a camera is being used to shoot a wedding." :D

I guess sometimes why we ask "googable" questions is because we need that 2nd opinion.. reviews online or even magazines can sometimes be misleading, especially if they're biased towards some brands.. look at it this way: if a noob qns is being asked and answered here, then we may well be helping a million other noobs around the world when they google and find the thread..

Pros need not be the one answering the qns all the time.. and yes, it can be quite boring to always answer the same qns.. but if you look around a bit more, there are some amatuers who have been learning and asking, and who have this spark and eagerness in them to, in return, share what they've just learnt.. the Pros should leverage and encourage this group of people to help out the newcomers more.. breed the culture of learning and teaching!

Eh, better don't call me lawyer in this forums, otherwise a certain person from the darkness will ask me to show my qualifications to prove :) HEHEHE.

cause you are our famous clubsnap inhouse lawyer mah.

next time if got outings should ask you come along, so you may give legal advise to photographers on the spot, what can shoot and what can not shoot. ;)
