I wonder why a public service, which is supposed to serve the public, is instead only interested in maintaining the bottom line?

this is as the same as why does our ministers need big pocket when they are serving in
public service? the answer is simple, they need to be profitable so that they can attract
talented to the job. these talented one dont come from local, some come from across the causeway. ;)

stations that are without doors..

how is that a safety issue?

I've been to subways in London, Paris, New York, Philadelphia and NONE of these
subways have doors ...

I don't mind being charged more... but they must decrease the waiting time and over-crowding.

me too, i was not bother becos its would only make taking taxi is more affordable now. hehe :sticktong

Complain loh...still increase what!

The thing here is open market. If the government opens up this sector, these companies can go fly kite liao...

Well, it is good the govt always allow us to air our views so long as we do not abuse the avenues.

Remember the frog story that was often quoted in public speeches? Heat it up slowly, let it struggle, by the time it got used to it, its already cooked.

We are but some sumptous frog legs to be served on a dinner platter.

Bon Appétit

post here is of little use

stomp it!

soon.. we will be like Japan where a train trip can cost as much as ten of dollars.

that train can go heaven loh...

honestly speaking, do these companies deserve a fare hike ? has the issues in service level and safety concerns raised by the commuters being addressed ?

Well, honestly.. NO.

But then think from another perspective, say our transport companies changed from privatized to government owned. No profits involved. We should have cheaper fares right? Wrong, mainly because government owned enterprises have no incentive to cut cost or improve service. They would probably just do the minimum to get their funding and we, as commuters would probably pay more for less.

The profit debate has been ongoing for public services over many countries for ages. Ultimately, while it sucks that our transport system is not perfect and all, it may be worst. Allowing it to be privately owned gives the owners incentive to maximize profit and cut cost, hence lowering fares in the long run. Now, being a duopoly, the government has to stop rampant fare increases and profit taking by imposing price ceilings and service levels to adhere to.

IMHO, the lessor of 2 evils. Of course, the big gainer is the body that collects the tax ;) go figure..

anyway to keep things in perspective...

if you look at SBS Transit's income statement for 2006...
their turnover was about $612m. Increasing fares by 1.5% means their revenue increases by
maybe $10m.

they expect their staff costs to increase by about $10m, fuel costs to increase by 20% - 25% which is about $24m to $30 m (and considering that oil futures just hit a record high this week). so they expect their costs this year to increase by at least $35m.

So revenue increase by at most $10m while costs increase by at least $35m

time to cycle to school liao. next time go shoot also ride bicycle.

healthy n cheap.

why staff cost increase by $10m ? what is the justification for the increase in staff cost ?

how come everyone only complain about the costs, never complain about the fruits of the economy ie. property yield, stock markets, highest starting pay for fresh grads in so many years...

you work for the Pay and Pay Co.?....:bsmilie::sweatsm:
How many citizens benefited from the property yield, stock market, start pays???? I know i didnt .... and yet I have to pay more for most of other items....:dunno:

Hmmmm maybe it is because many of us are not

1) being enbloced and becoming instant millionaires
2) Are not actively involved in playing the stock markets
3) Are not fresh grads and hence highest starting pay doesnt affect us
Hence the reasons you gave for celebrating dont affect us in anyway

However we are

1) Not getting pay increases despite what the papers say
2) Having to cope with constant increases in prices of everything despite our pay remaining the same
3) Having to cope with increases of daily necessities related to GST of 7 percent
4) Having no money to buy car, no money to take taxi and yet every year have to content with increase in Public Transport fees when they are making high profits each year.
Maybe that is why we complain.....
