Samsung Nx 10 ?

First test shots... on my cats as usual. Using the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens in Aperture Priority mode :)

Being a retail dept store, cost is the RRP... $1,099 for the zoom kit and $1,199 for the 30mm kit.

Thanks so much... 30mm F2 is more favorable for me, wah decisions decisions. I guess next best thing is go and feel for the cameras myself.

What is you opinion of this versus the Oly m43? can't remember which ones you had.

Forgot to ask.... how well did this camera do on video?

A single focal length at 30mm is really too limiting for me as a general purpose lens... I can't shoot portraits without distortions and it's not wide enough for landscapes.. which was why I opted for the zoom kit lens instead. I would have loved to get both lenses but they don't seem to be selling the lenses separately.

I have only did some test shots at night (plus some this morning) but the zoom kit lens seems to be a really sharp one. Many reviews reported that it is slightly soft at the corners but it is not too important to me for all intents and purposes as long as the centre is bitingly sharp... which it seemed to be. I have the Olympus E-P1 and E-P2 and the Samsung zoom kit lens seemed to be a bit sharper to me than the Olympus m43 14-42mm.

And although the E-P2 can now work properly in TTL mode closed-up with the external flash FL-14, I find that the closed up flash exposure of the NX10 is still generally better. Example... another 2 flash exposed closed up shots taken last night...

There seems to be a difference in the way the NX10 AF as compared to the m43 cameras. The available AF modes ranged from multi-AF mode to a Single AF mode where the area of the AF square could be varied in size. If the smallest sized single AF area is selected, there must be sufficient contrast in the area otherwise the image at that point would not be sharp. Example, if I placed that AF point on my cat's eye, the NX10 would tend to focus on the nearby hairs which have suffcient contrast even if they were not covered by the AF point. If I had used the multi-AF mode (like in the 2 pics above) or the large single AF area maybe, the eyes would be captured sharply together with the nearby hairs. According to the NX10 brochure, it seems that it measures contrast data from the image sensor directly and not from the selected AF sensor to calculate the distance for fast AF speed. So I think in practice, the preferred AF mode is actually the Multi-AF mode or the large single-AF mode for the NX10.

The AMOLED display of the NX10 is really godsend for LiveView cameras as it is so bright and clear under daylight conditions at different viewing angles unlike the LCD displays of other cameras. All display screens should be made with AMOLED.

I don't really shoot videos with digital cameras but the test video clips that I tried with the NX10 looked very good.

Thanks for your descriptions and sample photos, your cats have a nice coat of fur with clear sheen on them. The zoom sounds good too since there will be an adapter for F mount so putting on fast primes are no problem. Got to read further if the camera will zoom in with a turn of the zoom ring like the m43 cameras. To be honest, I am still more incline towards K-x due to several factors and K-x not too much bigger either. Big downer for K-x is no adapter for this Kaf2 mount.

When the lens is set to manual focusing mode, the screen image would immediately magnify to about 2.4x when the focusing ring is touched to assist in the focus adjustment. Being only about 600K dot resolution, the AMOLED screen of the NX10 is not as good as the standalone EVF of the E-P2/W-PL1 but still better than the EVF and LCD screens of the GF1. The other option is to use the 900K dot resolution EVF of the NX10 for manual focusing.

K-x is probably a better choice as it has more lenses and accessories and they are already available. There are no lenses or accessories available for the NX10 apart from the battery at the moment and no EDT as to when they would be available locally as well. Samsung should have at least made sure that some lenses and accessories like flashes are available when they launched the NX10 which would have made the NX10 more attractive. Surprisingly, it seems that the NX10 is selling very well in UK despite the shortage of accessories. Maybe it's because they have a kit there which bundles both the 30mm and the 18-55mm kit lenses together. :dunno:

Tried the samsung Nx10 last week, impressive little camera. it is well built little camera with good image quality.
Handling is very easy and the built is solid.

Can the Samsung NX 30mm f2.0 pancake lens be used on Pentax dSLR? Is it Pentax mount?

No, NX mount is different from the Pentax K-mount.

Hey Tomcat, thanks for the updates on the NX10. Its certainly a very nice camera, I tried it out at the PC fair and was impressed with this first effort from Samsung (though I guess they have experience from previous work with Pentax).

Just wondering, which are the authorised dealers for the NX10 now? Samsung call centre directed me to the Samsung store and Harvey Norman/Best Denki which sell at list price. If NX10 can be priced at just less than 1k, it would be a very tempting proposition for me, especially the new white color option!

Would also suggest that this thread be closed and a new one set up? The title is kinda misleading for prospective NX10 owners.

I have seen it at SLR Revolution. You would probably get a good price there.

You can buy the 30mm lens separately at the Sumsung showroom in Vivo City. The 2 flash units were available at SLR-R. Best Denki at Vivo City has all 3 lens plus the flash displayed.

Thanks. Will check with showroom at Vivocity to see if they sell it there. A lot of stores do display the different lenses and flashes but do not sell them. Harvey Norman at Jurong
Point also have them on display but do not sell them.

Just bought the 30mm lens from Samsung at Vivocity.... cost $479 !

What? Thats expensive. =x. But I might be waiting for the 20mm Wide Pancake Lens to be released this year. Meanwhile I will stay with my 18-55mm len and the SteinZeiser wide angle lens first...
