S5Pro - is it here yet

Do you really need the 12mp? Frankly, most usage does not require 12mp. I am shooting in 6 MP now, in Jpegs.

However, the S5 can have higher dynamic range for its shots at 6MP. Isn't that wonderful? :D

Make the best picture(s) out of this cam. That's all I can say here.:)

maybe he pro lehz..the need for giant size poster prints...

I spent the entire afternoon today testing my S5 Pro that have been upgrade to the latest 1.04 firmware.

Here are what I found out:
  1. The overall tones on Flash White Balance mode look much warmer especially when I bounce my SB-800 60-degree upwards on a white ceiling. However, if I use direct flash, the tones are accurate. Images shot using SB-800 with the S5 Pro set to Auto WB mode look accurate also.
  2. Using studio strobes, namely Bowens and Jin Bei, look a bit warm on Flash WB mode. As predicted, images shot using Auto WB with strobes look accurate.
  3. Images shot using Elinchrom light heads on Flash WB mode have very balance tones.
  4. Outdoor portraitures with Flash WB mode look a tad bit too warm also.
Overall, I found the WB after installing the new firmware a bit too warm for my liking, unless care is taken to ensure proper WB. In most cases, I will prefer to put to Auto WB.

Thank you for such wonderful comprehensive test..

After PS, 6 MP ==> 2++ MP.
I normally print my photo in A4 or A3 size, 6 MP for A3 size photo is definately not enough. If you just want to display your photo in website.....2 or 3 MP will be more than enough.

A3 size at least a 7-8 MP file size?

A3 print with 6 Mp quite enough for me...
i print many A3+ size using 6 Mp (S2pro)...
as long as ur pics r sharp, there's no problem at all...
except u look at ur pics closely...
but mostly noone ever look a big size print very close lar...

In the past , I have printed images up to A0 size using a Nikon D1, which is only a 2.62 MP camera, and still look excellent.

Have you guys ever heard of a wonderful Photoshop plug-in called Genuine Fractals PrintPro? Advertising professionals and photographers are using this software to create wall-size ad posters from just a 6MP or 8MP files.

I agree too that a 6MP camera is more than sufficient to print it out in A3 size (coz I've print them in A1 size before for commercial advertisement. Even with a 22MP camera, it isnt enough to print a poster the size of 2m by 2m. However, such posters are meant to see from afar. I'd rather keep it small and save myself more disk space. Haha my HDD is always running out of space...

depends on what kind of picture you are printing. For landscape or potraits it should be find but for macro it would be quite obvious.

yes, any cam of any pix can print up to A0 or larger. its whether u want to accept that quality or not. the details will look fuzzy or blurry, there's juz not enuf. i've heard of GF & it can do a very nice scale up, but if the details is not there, means its not there. nothing u can do to create extra details. the fuzzy blurry look will still be there.

when u compare the same big size from the 22MP & a 6MP DSLR, the diff is huge. u can even see the diff even if its a 12MP DSLR. i've seen those big ads from shopping mall esp those cosmetic & clothings shops, i can tell very distinctively which r done with DSLR, the image juz cudn't hold itself at that kind of size. (very much like turning up the vol on mp3 music, it breaks up)

come on la.... storage these days r really cheap. :D i'm considering buying the Seagate ES drives to keep my pics.

so coming back to the question, can the S5 produce a 12MP image juz like the S3 under Silkypro? or is there any artifacts using this s/w? thx again for any tips. :)

 too much cropping ba..use composition crop not PS crop..

Thanks for explaining. Technically I think yes, but you cannot use the extra dynamism.

However, if your work requires such high MPs, and if 12MP barely meets your requirement, I suggest you go and get a MF dSLR. 39MP is a good number to start with. ;p

I have printed s3pro shots on A3 size and even viewing CLOSEUP, it looks pretty sharp. It is significantly better with A3 prints than my oly E1 which is 5meg. So I would rate it around like 8-10meg, roughly lah....

Bottomline is people has PIXEL PEEPED the s3pro and D200 to death and the conclusion is that the D200 is SLIGHTLY higher in resolution. But the difference is minor.

I think 6MP is more than enough for A3. I know because I have printed a number of 16 inch by 20 inch prints using the humble D70 and the results are tack sharp, even at close range. And those were shot with the kit lens. I feel the result could have been even better if say a sharper lens like the 50mm 1.4 was used instead.

If you need larger prints than 16 x 20, then there is the 5D, etc. The question for most of us (who don't print that kind of size regularly) is: do we need more pixels or do we need better quality pixel? I think many of us -- after a while -- could do with a camera that simply gets the job done better, needing less post processing. High megapixels that are of good quality simply cost too much money.

Check out this excellent post from a professional wedding photographer based in New York (Ms Lina Jang). Her favourite cameras are the 5D (great bokeh) and the S5Pro (great colours, tonality). Even with the 5D, she shoots at only 6MP -- that's enough. The D200 doesn't work for her.

Rgds,

Yaow!

This little review of hers is great !

D200, you are blown away! Welcome D300.

Rgds,

What ever nikon brings out of its bag.

If they do not fix their random white balance and blueish colours, I will no tdream about it.

Not even if ti is a full frame of 24 megapixels.

Sigh. I'll continue to enjoy using my Fujis. And continue to deliver 6mp images to my clients. And continue to let them do whatever they wish, including print wall murals and banners with those. But I don't think I have such eyesight to go stare at the murals from 15cm away.

The fuji sensors are meant for a very select segment of users, for those who still do not realise. Not everyone will like them, and not everyone will like the fact the they are inside Nikon-made bodies. For print sizes, I'm very sure many of us have produced beautiful large prints out of the S2/S3/S5 Pro images will little diffiiculty.

Photobum's recommendation of Genuine Fractals is a good one, as that is a darn good tool. But remember - it is, like your camera, only a tool.

"Look and think before opening the shutter. The heart and mind are the true lens of the camera."

You are very right. Glad to hear you are happy with your choice and will stick with it.

But for many of us -- esp those who have never used a Fuji before -- the S5 is an interesting option and because it is so different in so many ways from the Canons and Nikons of this world, there is a need to try and understand more about this camera. For eg., the effective sensor resolution of the 45 degree Fuji CCD layout vs a conventional CCD is not at all straightforward, and I don't think I understand it. That makes the S5 neither a 6MP nor a 12MP camera -- in the conventional sense. Given the whole range of other DSLRs out there at various price points, this makes the decision a lot more complicated for those interested in getting the S5 -- but of course, a fun process as well! Fair to say that anyone would like to avoid making a costly mistake.
