I dun think flash is fired. Try not to use flash for night landscape...your flash power will not be strong enough and you will get exposure only for the near (few meters) areas and the far areas will be black or severely underexposed. Use a tripod, set your ISO to the lowest, use f4 for SxIS camera and let the long shutter speed do the work....unless you need to freeze moments, then, use larger aperture and/or up ISO...hope this can help to jump start a little.

I'm really NEW to this.

I got myself a Canon S5 1 month back, prior to that, has been using point and shoot camera (Lumix F33).

I've been trying out the marco mode but can't seem to get it right. After pressing the macro button, do I have to stay away from my object and use the zoom? or just place my camera real close to the object?

Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

For macro shot, you have to mover close to the obj. I remember Sx IS has macro (10 - 50cm distant) and super macro (0-10cm distant) mode....thats if I remember correctly....read the manual for the actual distant and use the correct mode as per your distant from the subject.

Can I seek advice for shooting food on S5? Going to attend a food event this weekend!

Bring tripod if you can, avoid flash, if really need, bounce the flash....direct flash is very harsh on food....bring some A4 paper as reflector to reflect some light to the darker side of the food. shadow on food will make it less appetizing....I am sharing what I know, I am also learning.

Hey Blinkblink, not the same one. I have the privilege to be invited to Rendezvous Hotel for a food event organised by a food editor friend

Thanks lastboltnut, I was intending to hand held my camera because it's going to be a sit down round table lunch :dunno: where should I be placing the A4 paper when shooting? Pardon my ignorance plssssss...still newbie baby.

Found this so assume I place A4 paper equal angle with my built in flash
