Hey, a noob Q, with close up lens, do you shoot in macro mode or just full zoom from far?
u can zoom to full.. but set manual focus at infinite.

Sorry. What is DOF? Depth of Field? What does it mean by "thiner"?
I cannot spell for nuts

Meant Thinner.

Ok, so for people like me, I think a deeper DOF would be better. You mean the Canon one will be "better" (meaning deeper) for me than the Radnox one? On Canon website, I only see the 500D not 250D. And you still need the Canon adapter to mount the close up lens?
Well, for macro, it is not easy getting a nice wide DOF. Most of the time, its quite thin, you just try to make sure that the eyes of the insect are in focus.

My Raynox has a higher magnification then the Canon macro filter, so its DOF is less.

Yes, you need an adapter to mount anything on the SxIS cameras. Need not be Canon though, there is Lensmate & Raynox also.

Was at Takashimaya today. Tried the various Special Scene settings.

How to take macro shots? Do I bring the lens very close to the object or stand far away and zoom in? I tried to use normal Macro and zoom in (within the allowable range) but found it very difficult to focus. The I used Super Macro and put the lens very close to the flower. Still very difficult to focus. Seems that when I get the picture focused, the focus goes haywire when I press the shutter. The following picture as good as I could get.

p.s. S3 default lens. No additions.

Handheld, P mode, super macro

Well, standing far away & zooming is considered tele macro. Most of the time, you would have to crop part of the picture away, as the subject is often too small. It is usefull to shoot something that will run away when you try to get close to it.

What type of focusing mode do you use? Continuous or Shot only? Shot only should not give you this problem.

Try to focus on contrasting parts of the flower. For your shot, the sepals are in focus, but the flower is not.

Was the two second shot handheld? Its times like this that an ND filter is handy, so that the lights do not blow out and you can get the nice silky effect on the water. I like the glow of the lights.

Thanks. I was using Continuous Focus. I will try the Single Focus the next time.

Yeah, stick to shot only. Unless you are trying to track some moving object or you yourself are moving around lot.

Sorry, what is ND filter? Handheld but resting on the railing. Not much use though. It was like 2 seconds, the railing was rounded and smooth, and the camera was sliding away. Maybe a slightly shorter exposure would have been better.

I also tried the following shots. All handheld.

Normal Mode, 1/30, f/2.7

Night Snapshot mode, 1/13, f/2.7

Foliage mode, 1/10, f/2.7
