whats the worst case scenario?

Ricoh discontinued the K mount. If thats the case, I would just buy some 2nd hand K mount cam when my current k-x is spoilt and continued to use my existing lens. If for some reasons, all the K mount cameras in the world become unusable one day, I can choose to buy other brands or take up a new hobby such as fishing..life still goes on...I love photography but it should not be an unhealthy love...

I just wanted to express my well-meaning point of view. It is very confounding to me why someone would want to keep holding to something he does not like and continue harping about it non-stop. Anthony - you are definitely more than entitled to your point of view and I hope I did not come across as saying that you have no right to be unhappy about the equipment you have. What I do mean however, is that harping about this non-stop in Pentax section can come across as rather undesirable (for want of a better word, I can't think of anything else less mild), so to speak.

I don't know if you got my point, but I hope you do.

You haven't broken any written rules, that's for sure; but I am also sure that at this point in time, many of the members here will either run out of patience or soon run out of patience; and I was hoping to offer some advice to avoid such a situation where you will just get flamed openly everytime you type anything. That's really how a forum works, and maybe it's not utopian but... That's how it is.

No apologies needed as I understood you completely. The main problem is that I can never be as articulate as you are, so any involvement with you in such matters will be suicidal for me. A guy like you with such keen eyes for photography cannot be as narrow minded as some would think and I am absolutely correct in my assumption. The K5 has pricked me alot especially the last few days but I will still keep it because it takes beautiful lanscape photos. My disatisfaction is mostly with myself for jumping into Pentax, so any adverse issue with Pentax will continue to irritate and that's me. I am not a rich man who can afford to just chuck a new camera, lose a hefty sum and go buy another. Thank you for your concern anyway. Cheers.

Actually with all those APS-C mirrorless cameras out there now, the K-mount won't die at all.
Else, ironically, switch to 5DII with adapter

Anthony, I believe that you have been shooting manual all the while and also have shot AF too. Is there a setting issue of the features of the camera that was not set or is it just the K5 and some lens that you seem to have issues with?

I own the K7 and having gone through PentaxForums I found a setting that helped me get better photos at high ISOs while everyone in Pentaxforums were complaining about that issue. Now I can take photos at ISO3200 without having any issues.

Maybe you could try tweaking the custom settings to see if something works.

I don't know the internal working of Ricoh and Pentax; but certainly one buys another because of synergy which one can achieve. We are consumers, and we are not likely to influence decisions made by these companies. Sometimes a brand is kept because it is well known; and sometimes not. As Pentaxians we like to see them keep the name, and above all further accelerate improvement in producing better camera and lenses for us to use. That's the power of acquisition, if done well. Like someone said, Pentax is the 10th largest, and in most case, this is not something you like it to remain. Both brands are old brands, and if the leadership is good, we should expect the combined R&D to come up with something to thrill us. In the meantime, write feedback to their website, and provide your arguments. Who know the management will give what some of you may be clamoring for!

News is neutral - it is neither good or bad. I learnt this while doing stock trading. News of a company going bankrupt can be good for short sellers, while bad for investors long the stock.

I have lived through so many mergers and takeovers it doesn't bother me anymore. My Konica-Minolta Dimage A2 sits in my dry box as a testament to that fact. Sometimes nothing happens after the company is being taken over. For example, Hasselblad - same brand, same dealer, same price (unfortunately!). Although I do not use the 503CW or the 500 EL/M as main workhorse anymore - being replaced by newer and faster DSLRs, but I am continuously finding new areas to explore. Just this week I bought a Polaroid back and some packs of Fuji FP-100B and FP-3000B, and boy, do I feel like a kid with a new toy! I have forgotten over the years the joy of capturing the image I want in one shot - no photoshop, no dark room techniques with the enlarger!

I started with MF (manual focus, not medium format!) 30 years ago and had no trouble moving to AF when the Canon 300D was first launched. Sure - the learning curve was steep and it took me a few months before I could tame camera to produce one good shot, but patience always win out in the end!

Sorry, OT... Anyway, Ricoh taking over Pentax is just that. It is too early to say if it is good or bad. Although I still hope that they will sell the 645D at $3K!

I came across the article by Richo, they both aim to complete against Nikon and Canon on the purpose of the acquisition, Richo believe Pentax Lens Manufacturing is worldclass.

agree with this. the decision to keep a brand name or not mostly a commercial deci$ion.

if the brand can still sell products, keep it. if not, change it.

An interesting read (although in Chinese) regarding Jun Hirakawa ( Designer for FA77, FA43, FA*85 etc ) and the other guy that went on to Nikon to develop the D7000 and current lineups.

No wonder Pentax is lacking at AF compared with N and C.

With Ricoh takeover, would really want to see more interesting yet performing designs !
