Ricoh GR - Acclaim everywhere

Why not just wait for a few days until the camera is really available here before you make such assumption? Since someone already said above that the price is gonna be better than the US (800usd)' I guess the local price difference is gonna be more than 200sgd.

Just one more week to go...
If you read my posts carefully, I did not say that the GR here will be more expensive than elsewhere. I had only commented that it would cost almost as much as the Coolpix A locally and explained why it's so. Of course if the local agent is willing to bundle in some optional accessories as free gifts, that would go a long way to sweeten the deal like when they bundled a free flash with the Sigma DPXM cameras.

It won't be much cheaper buying it directly from the States even if you have a friend going there. It would be selling for US$800 in the States which would work out to about S$1,040 after foreign exchange conversion. At that price, the GR is about US$300 cheaper than the Coolpix A which is selling at a street price of ~ US$1,100 there. The difference between the States and Singapore here is that the Coolpix A is being sold here way below the US price at S$1,200 or less. US tourists who are interested in the Coolpix A should therefore buy it here in Singapore especially as they could get back a rebate of 7% GST for even greater savings.

Oh, I see what you mean, the Coolpix A street price now much less than RRP

Ah... Darn.... Looking at the specs and the oft-overlooked features of its leaf shutter; allowing flash sync speed of a lot higher than 1/180, this camera is soooooooo close to the "perfect" traveling pocket camera for me! :(

Dang~ Since Ricoh "took" Pentax TAv mode, why didn't Ricoh make it WR too? :'(

PS: Built-in ND filter coupled with high flash sync speed would be VERY beautiful for flash, especially off-shoe flash! Baracus.... Are you READING THIS? :D

for those who has used the camera, will the LCD difficult to see in bright sunlight? I'm wondering if viewfinder is a must in that condition.

I envy those switching from Sony RX100 for taking the poison so quickly... ;p

Pros of RX100:
More megapixels (and effective ones)
Arguably better video features/control/output (e.g. smiling shutter in video to take photos automatically)
MF peaking

Pros of GR:
Better + more control
Snap focus
ND filter
Arguably better IQ*

* - I know that this one-liner is potentially ignoring the many advantages of that bigger APS-C sensor, but dpreview's image comparison tool shows very little differences to the naked eye, and at 100% crop, to strongly prefer one over the other. For me, I think I'll be satisfied with both output, and I acknowledge that there'll be certain scenarios where the bigger sensor will pull it ahead...

Perhaps I should just hope for a good price on the GR, and the sudden appearance of some cash that, for some reason, will be earmarked for camera equipment only... :bsmilie:

Hm, I am not allowed to post links but there is a blog written by Craig Atkinson who uses both cameras (title STREETCA it can be found that way)

RAW seems a bit fiddly from what he wrotes but overall GR easily looks quite a bit better to me (both lens and sensor IQ-wise) but that's to be expected. One the video front the Sony wins easily.
Also the Ricoh is much more ergonomic the RX100

I am interested in this camera (it is how I found that site as well) since it would be much smaller and sharper than the NEX5N Sigma 19/2.8 combo I use, but the problem I have with it is that 28mm is quite limiting and on many occasions it is not possible to avoid the wide angle distortion
But it is currently the most pocket-able APS-C camera and I want it just because of that.

GR has a setting to set the lens as a 35mm lens (FOV), this would help w/ wide angle distortion a bit :)

And you are not alone on the last part. It's the smallest APSC camera w/ great ergonomic, a joy to hold and use.

The original GR1/GR1v film camera (also come w/ 28/2.8 lens) got a lot fans, I'm sure this new GR is gonna have a lot happy users.

Feng, may ask if the GR has any sensor cleaning function

Hmm, I don't think it needs sensor cleaning since it has a fixed lens. And I'm sure I didn't see it in the menu.

Yes of course but cropping is not much point for me, eg. why would I buy a FF camera and not use all the sensor area.
They could do the 35mm fov with a smaller sensor and a faster lens in a smaller body, I would love that :)

If I take pics with the Sigma 19mm on the NEX I do it using the full frame but for landscape shots the camera size does not matter as much.
But with people shots it does. So I really like that the Ricoh does not look nearly as 'serious' as it really is :)

I guess I will wait a little and try to control my G.A.S.
