Review of Canon SX50HS by a hobbyist

Why I chose SX50HS over Panasonic FZ200. I have not tested FZ200, SLR Revo doesn't have a demo unit for me to play with.

Main advantages of SX50HS (based on my personal needs)
1. 1200mm vs 600mm (there is a signficiant difference especially if you are going to crop)
2. I am a Canon user, so I am comfortable with the layout and the OS, layout is similar to G1X, OS is the same.
3. More importantly it shares the same battery as G1X, so I can just use the spare batteries i have for G1X on SX50 HS. Furthermore both are canon, so I can also use the same accessories such as wireless remote, etc. If I get the panasonic I have to spend extra money on accessories.
4. From reviews such as ephotozine, photography blog, Canon's sensor is better in my opinion. In terms of ISO performance, Canon is more than 1 stop, perhaps two stops better than Panasonic. Therefore in my opinion SX50 is not too disadvantageous despite having more than 2 stops slower at the telephoto end. But Panasonic has the edge of shooting fast action under low light situation due to the superb f2.8 throughout the range.

Canon SX50HS

Panasonic FZ200

Therefore to me being able to reach a subject closer and better framing is more important than having a f2.8. So I chose SX50HS in the end.

ISO test (SX50HS vs G1X). I am sorry if the images are a little underexposed...I was doing this beyond 12am and was rushing to go to sleep (need to wake up at 5 45am!) All images are taken in RAW and converted to jpeg without any post processing.

ISO 80 (only SX50HS has it)

It's quite obvious that G1X has sharper image and has more details (e.g. the texture of the blue book)

ISO 400 we can see IQ from SX50HS has degraded, details are lost and smudging occurs compared to G1X.

At ISO 800, G1X's IQ in sharpness and details has dropped by a little. Noise is more obvious now for SX50HS.

You would want to avoid ISO 6400 for SX50HS.

For users not using raw: Here's the ISO test of the jpeg photos straight out from camera. The noise reduction is set as standard, all other settings at default.

If you save the pictures for, say ISO 6400, and compare side by side between jpeg straight out of camera and raw converted to jpeg, you can see a difference in quality. The jpeg out from camera has noise reduction applied to it, as such details are lost and the image looks more smudged compared to the raw version. The noise in the jpeg is less grainy compared to raw due to in - camera noise reduction processing.

I'm using an SX30 and it already has hotshoe and the framing assist. I just checked dpreview for the SX40 and it has both too. You are right - no RAW.

SX30 has ISO 80, but SX40 does not.

Thanks for the correction....didn't realise SX40's zoom assist button is located at the back of the camera.

SX50's ISO 80 I am referring in comparison to G1X.

If got chance shall test some macro shots.

A test on macro mode. You can indeed close up to 0cm, my lens was touching the flower. However this is at the widest focal length. As usual the longer focal length the larger is the minimum focusing distance.

Hi, if i were to get a speedlight for this camera, what would be the model? and does work for both sx50 and sx40?
