Review of Canon SX50HS by a hobbyist

wats the compatible speedlight/flash for this SX50 or SX40??

Canon has a standard hotshoe mount for speedlight across its range of cameras. A speedlight that has canon mount and supports E-TTL should be fine. I don't think there is one dedicated speedlight especially for SX50. If you are talking about size wise maybe the most suitable is 270EX II or maybe the new 90 EX. I tired yongnuo 565EX around the size of 430EX II or 580EX II and I find the speedlight too huge and heavy for balance.

I love this series of Canon cameras. Have been buying and using them since the first model S1, S2, S3, S5 and then I decided to stop at SX10. Too expensive to change every year. Along the way, I think I posted some amateur reviews on S5 and SX10 on this forum. I skipped SX20, 30 and 40 but decided it is time to buy the SX50HS. Instead of starting a new thread, I hope you do not mind if I contribute some pics to this thread. My comparison is more with the previous models, especially the SX10 which I still have.

First off, compared to previous models up to SX10, I find it more plasticky. Not so solid. It also feels lighter, maybe contributed by the removal of the AA batteries. I was not even sure if the camera was in the bag! I noted that the lens cap now has a string to attach to the strap. My SX10 did not have it. Kept dropping the lens cap.

The optical zoom is just insane at 50x. I took a couple of pictures from my office through my office window. Sorry for poor image quality. This is more to show the zoom reach. i reduced the filesize from around 2MB to 200Kb, posted to photobucket, then uploaded here. Not sure if this is the correct way.

Oh wowowww... I thought the optical zoom is insane! But the 100x and 200x blow the mind away! You can even see the lady in bikini!

The 100x and 200x are digital zooms?

Thanks for the review.

Yup it's digital zoom. 50x is optical zoom and up to 4x digital zoom...haha great camera to be a spy?

Yup. 50x optical zoom is insane. If I were to carry a dslr with similar optical zoom, it may look like this!

I just discovered to my dismal that after so many models, Canon still cannot get the picture in movie function right. This is the feature where you can snap a full resolution picture whilst shooting a movie.

Problem is that when you do this, the movie clip paused at that point, complete with shutter sound, and does not record.

Bought this insanely superzoom camera in US and have used a few times since Oct, I might have been the first here to own one haha...
The zoom is incredible...

The Canon SX50HS is a capable little camera, and but as with all cameras, it is a tool. It is not the only 50x optical super zoom bridge camera in the market now. Balance your budget, your needs/wants and buy whichever camera/tool you like for stills/video. And, bring it out with you.

Great review, Gundamseed84.

My 2 cents... Image stabilization is pretty good. You'll need good light or a tripod/monopod at the highest zoom settings cos the lens drops to f6.5. Digital zoom (100x to 200x) best left for Private Investigators or voyeurs. *chuckles*

Here are some handheld shots I took with my SX50HS.

Recently a random thought came to my mind that maybe SX60HS can have wifi function that allow remote viewing and shooting like 6D. Then I will be tempted to change because I can place my gear at a hotspot for birds and control it from a distance. If I can even control the power zoom via remote that would really ve great especially in composition.

Gundamseed84,

I assume you want the function for shooting birds or shy creatures.

If the SX60HS has a remote control as such you can place the camera near to the subject or spot, you don't need a super zoom.

According to John Arifin, the wildlife photographer based in Singapore, his (birds) subjects were about between 20~25m away when he used a 600mm lens to shoot. The furthest one was about 40m.

i am a proud owner of an fz200 and as you know, these 2 are always compared. So far your review has been the most unbiased and informative... congrats to your new cam. seems in my opinion, these 2 bridge cameras ( fz200 and sx50sh) are almost alike with only the difference in prioritized features... superzoom vs constant aperture... both actually serves their own purposes well... regards...
