I figured this would be a much better place to ask than in the general forums.

Does anyone know of a thick, secure (safe and RELIABLE) strap I could use for a camera that weighs up to 10kg?

No fancy lugs or mounting hardware - just a simple adjustable loop design to slide onto a rail that's about 4" in diameter (The rail is X shaped with no sharp edges, and it's not circular). I would just tighten the loops and retention is provided by stop knobs that will not penetrate through the strap. The knobs will act as a physical obstruction to prevent the strap from sliding off.

I could make it out of 2" canvas webbing or leather and belt clasps, but I wanted to see what's available on the market first.

Any recommendations? :)

optech. it doesnt state how much it can support but i don't think the weak point lies with the strap but the mounting points.

take a look at the heavy duty ones for mf cameras or cam bags or tripods.

Thanks flip.

Those are definitely out for me. I prefer a solid continuous strap with no weak point.

Also, with that sort of load, having something 'boinging' happily away is actually a hinderence (to me).

If u don't mind DIY, u can try the climbing shops at penisula. All the straps there can handle 2000kg torque, might be an overkill for ur usage. They've adjustables too. Since u're worried about weak point, the weak point in those straps re still overkill for ur cam.

Thanks for the heads-up slacker and fallen! :)

Will go check those out!

hey bro Dream Merchant, i happen to be a rock climber and, like what bro Fallenphoenix has mentioned, you might want to consider some climbing webbing or daisy chains. they aren't too fancy, just reinforced stitched webbing that can hold a ridiculous amount of weight. i cannot be sure what you're looking to do, but i would reckon that a webbing of appropriate length and a carabiner or two and you should be good to go. ;)

YO Jonno thanks manno!

Yup yup, me thinks the climber's webbings should more than do the trick.

Like described, I just need a safe and reliable sling for a camera up to 10KG. No quick detach or anything fancy - just STRAIGHTFORWARD good ol reliability. And since the webbing would be at least 2", shoulder comfort shouldn't be a problem. I've been lugging the load with the old school 1-1/2" camera manufacturer's strap so far with no shoulder problems. Only those ultra skinny >1cm strap enders looped around the rail I mentioned earlier aren't very good for my mental health! :bsmilie:

I would highly recommend Upstrap ...the only problem is, they won't ship to Singapore, so u need to find someone in their list of approved countries to bring in for you.

I've been using it for more than a year now, camera basically stays on my shoulder all the time.

video cams usually have their own straps. Otherwise, its brands like porta brace, petrol, kata that provides bags and accessories. Or beach road to get them to sew replicates, but material and comfort might not match.

when you think about it, sometimes its better to just fork out the hundred odd dollars for a well made strap, especially when you're carrying a $20k+ upwards broadcast camcorder (my reference for beach road would be for other things, like lighting bags to carry the lights).

to answer your initial question, just use the images from say porta brace camcorder strap as a reference for video camcorders around 8-10kg.
