In camera IS much preferred as you stated, legacy manual lenses would enjoy the benefits. Shoot at arm's length? hoi describing me ah? :sweatsm:

:bsmilie: Well we all have to aged sometime. That's me too, Azul ... need "shooting glasses". This is where the magnification comes in handy for manual focus, I can move my arms closer i.e. I can see :what:.

I think the AF assist lamp on the GF-1 and pop-up flash would make it more PnS like, expecially for taking snapshots in gatherings and social events. Some owners of E-P1 found it so difficult to focus in low light that they gave up doing party snap shots.
The pop-up flash is definitely not perfect ( with the guide number at 6@ISO100 instead of the normal 12@ISO100) and definitely does not meet the requirements of professional portait photography. However, if the new breed of m43 is aimed at bridging the gap between PnS and dSLR, it should first be a good PnS..... and all PnS have a popup flash for low light candids.
The AF speed of GF-1 of about 0.4s (on a beta unit, and may be closer to 0.35s in production) would also bring it closer to dSLR in terms of speed. The measured AF speed of E-P1 is around 1sec.
Having said all these, I think the E-P1's image quality is simply stunning, beating some entry level dSLR and equalling the very best in the segment. Good noise control in high ISO, excellent per-pixel sharpness and nice colors.
If I were to choose between the two, I may just go for the GF-1. Having owned the Sigma DP1/DP2 as well as the E-P1 before, both cameras of exceptional image quality but somehow a little slow on AF, I realized that sometimes speed and usability of a camera may be worth a slight sacrifice in terms of image quality. So while the E-P1 may be expected to edge out the GF-1 in image quality, speed and features of the GF-1 would swing my decision towards it.
Ofcourse, this is just my humble opinion, others would love the styling and image quality of the E-P1 so much they will never consider buying the the GF-1. Some others don't even use AF![]()
I think this sums up the difference for people choosing the E-P1 and GF-1 very well. One man's meat is another man's poison. Another issue is the in-body IS and in-lens IS. I would like the best of both worlds but that doesn't exist, and my own personal preference is also for faster AF (which is why I'm using a G1)
Can't wait for the 20mm F1.7 pancake!!!. looks yummy!
The focal length is kind of turn off... dunno how to use this lens... neither here nor there... you will know when the lens is out.
Really? How many compact 35mm cameras, including those from Olympus came with a 38mm lens? Plenty, as I recall.
An effective 40mm seems just enough to get a small group without struggling and the f/1.7 means that you can do it reasonably with candle light, such as taking birthday cake photos. The older you get, the better your chances to get a properly lit shot lah.
I think the 20mm f/1.7 will be a great lens, especially if it has high image quality to match the price.
I have never used a 38mm lens since I never really liked this focal length. 35mm was my "standard lens" in my film days, 20mm was my favourite wide. So 40mm (in 135 format) is really a weird focal length for my style of shooting, but like you mentioned, everyone shoots differently. I just either go tele or pretty wide, nothing between 40-85mm.
The GF1 is interesting too. It has its own strengths, one I like is the dial working for both magnification and exposure, definitely for better shooting when using manual lenses, no need to jump from one dial to another as in the E-P1, and no need to take off eye from viewfinder. Wonder how is it's ISO performance.
Hmm ... may have to find a way to buy the GF1 body, I need to replace my 10 year old video camera that still uses tape anyway(found an excuse). It should be cheaper than a real video camera I think ... only thing is that my 10-year old video camera kills these cameras for anti-shock, IS, VR.

I am pretty much comparing this lens to the 17mm in terms of focal length.
Parties? Who can beat the "Wildcat" doing the "Wild Thing"! :bsmilie:
so is it true EP1's 14-42 has no IS but can be used on GF1?
I don't get what you mean,is there even a rumour? Either way,E-P1's 14-42 has no IS but still can be use on the GF1 because it uses the same mount
