I mention "call them"!

Anyway, is true that many local professional, don't really bother much about putting up a sites, look at the PPAS, when is their last update?

For the newer generation of professionals are more Internet savvy, but again, unless you know the photographers personally, seen his works and styles, else might be deceive by some wannabe spend a lot money to put up a impressive site, but they real works are very weak.

Yes, I read you.

But calling is only the beginning. IF they agree, there is still the travelling to do! No?

Now that is a start!

But I noticed from his website which you kindly provided that his official address is in Paris. So is he local or is he overseas?
If a table tennis player born overseas, represents Singapore and wins a medal, which country gets the credit?

Well, I took your kind advice.

I have the Yellow pages- both the Commercial/Industrial Guide and the Buying Guide.

I looked for "Professional Photogaphers".

None.

But there are "photographers". So I looked at the columns. Some show pictures. The majority do not. Who should I call? Hmm, how to get there?

Then I went to the internet. In less than 10 minutes I got these

www.opalenik.com
www.donkirbyphotography.com
www.monakhun.com
www.arnorafaelninkkinen.org
www.connieimboden.com
www.guidoargentini.com
www.bitesnich.com
www.VIIphoto.com
www.joycetenneson.com
www.haidukphotography.com
www.dykinga.com
www.bobbilane.com

Maybe our local professionals are so busy making money that a website is totally unimportant to them. Or there might be other reasons.

Well, short of calling up these anonymous Singapore Photographers and asking them to show me their portfolio, and spending time to travel to their studios (well there are a lot of listings!) How am I going to compare the works of local photographers with those overseas which I can assess so easily?

well, i did an internet google search on "singapore photographer" and in less than one second it gave me www.wendychan.com

it's not THAT hard looking for an singapore photographer's portfolio online surely? :bsmilie:

hi guys,

i was just wondering, since i am pretty new in photography, how is the photography standard in singapore like?
I was checking out some overseas photographers' portfolio and was quite amazed by their works. When i check out some singaporean photographers' it didnt amaze me as much.Am i wrong to say that the standard in singapore is much lower to international standard? or was it because i have yet to see local photographers' work. I am checking out the NUS montage exhibition tomorrow.

Looking forward to it.
Meantime, your opinions.. haha

Sab.

he is singaporean but is currently based in paris. he does provide a singapore contact number also.

to continue your football analogy, it's like david beckham who plays for england but is currently based in madrid.

Very true.

But did this Yian Hong represent himself or Singapore? Or was it the climate in France that allow him to bloom, giving him the benefit of the doubt that his photography is "up there with the best"

Thank you!

Am I allowed to give my opinion on Wendy's photographs?

Well, from the way I write, you know what I think of her photography.

btw i think that photography is an "universal language".
i dun see the point of comparing which country the photographer are from.

just an opinion though !

You are absolutely correct that it is really not necessary to compare. But unfortunately comparison is there to stay.

Which school is better? ACS or Raffles etc ad nauseum.

Which wanton mee is better?

Which car is faster?

The issue is this. The TS, having looked at some portfolios from overseas and locally, felt that the overseas fortfolios are of a much better quality. And he posted this thread to further clarify his impression.

Sorry that if I mislead you, we have more than a few hundred photographers practice professionally here, but only a handful of them have a website, and most of them are not keep it update.

To know where are these photograhers, the traditional way is still look into yellow page, even the PPAS also have less then a hundred members.

DB is based in Madrid because he was paid $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to be there.

Why did YH base himself in Paris?

I saw some works of an Singaporean, trained in France.

His works are good! Very good! In my opinion, very creative way of seeing. I would love to meet him.

But he is now a barber. Only takes pictures for fun now.

Reason? He could only survive as a photographer if he produces works like most of those whose websites are listed in this thread. He refused to make pictures like these.
