Primary lens for your 7D

Which would be your primary lens on 7D

Just sold my 500D KitII and eagerly awaiting the arrival of 7D. Would like to know for those who has DECIDED to change to 7D, what would be the primary lens on your 7D (on your camera most of the time). For the naysayers of 7D, kindly refrain from posting unconstructive comments :D Thanks

hi i also just got my 7D body only with no lens. Don't know which lens to buy or even chose between 3rd party lenses and the 17-55mm... guess i read on the comments in your thread..for me i love to go food hunting and of course take pic of them. nice landscape interest me too.

The 17-55 f/2.8 IS is pricey but it is the best walk-around, general purpose lens for the 7D. Equally as good are the 24-70 and 24-105, but they are a short on the wide side for a crop camera like the 7D.

Thanks bro will consider that:)

I find the 15-85mm to have a more practical range than the 17-55mm but wished it came in f/2.8 instead. Canon makes money by compromising better focal range with lousier aperture values or vice-versa. There's always a compromise. Blah!

I do like this set-up btw:

1) 10-22mm: Landscape
2) 24-70mm: Walkabout/portraiture
3) 70 -200mm: Sports/Wildlife
4) 50 f/1.4: portraiture

I think these are all the lenses I'd ever need. Well, maybe not EVER but even on a crop body or not, it covers the necessary focal ranges nicely. Just my opinion.

imo, i just cannot have 24mm as the widest end on my 7D, so the 24-70L and 24-105L are out for me though initially i did consider about the latter.

will get a 17-55 soon to replace my kit zoom and pair the hidden L with my 85/f1.8. should be sufficient for me from wide to short tele end.

i am not a fan of UWA so the normal 17 and 18mm pretty much suffice my occasional landscape needs. :)

Another vote for the 15-85mm. I find myself using the 55-85 range quite a bit when walking around and would certainly miss some shots with it if I got the 17-55 instead. In contrast, I haven't found myself needing the 2.8 aperture yet although I would think its nice to have it.

I did consider getting the 24-105, although after reading and comparing it seems the IQ is quite similar to the 15-85 and I will lose 9mm on the wide end which is quite significant especially for scenery shots.

Of course these are just my opinions if you had to use just one lens (ie as the topic said, primary lens).

Matt

I agreed with you here. 24mm to shoot landscape not enough wider enough. That Why I go for 17-55.
No doubt that 24-70 or 24-105 are good. Definely will consider if I upgrade to Full-Frame.

But looking at your signature the perfect combination would be

7D + 10-20mm + 24-70mm + 70-200mm

Seriously,

After buying,
I have never take off my 17-55 from my 7D other than for macro shoots.
even my 50mm1.8 is sitting in the dry cab.:bsmilie:

Hi
I have the following lenses on my 7D:
1) 10-22 for landscape
2) 35f2 for indoor shots and walkabout lens
3) 85 1.8 for portraits and medium telephoto
4) 70-200 f4 or f2.8 (planning to buy in the future) for tele, some portraits

I am thinking of selling my 24-105. Originally it was supposed to replace my 15-85 which is another good walkabout lens. But the IQ on both are roughly the same and the prime lenses I have are good substitutes (minus having to switch lenses frequently.) So is letting go of my L lens a good idea?

The only lens that goes on this body is my Sigma 120-300/2.8. Depending on the occasion the Canon 70-200/2.8 or Canon 300/4 IS may find their way there as well.

very satisfied and contended with my below setup ;)

Canon 7D
EF-S 10-22 IS USM Landscape
EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS USM General/Walkabout
EF-S 55-250 IS Sports/Tele
EF 100 f2.8 USM Macro

The choice of lens is subjective to the photographer/user... Just like the old saying goes "beauty is relative"...

I suggest if you're buying a lens, go rent/borrow so that you can experience it's performance....

i don't really need to cover the ful range as i only do certain shots, so please forgive if i do not fall within the norm category..;p

Canon 7D
Tokina 10-17mm
canon 50mm f1.4
canon 100mm f2.8L macro
speedlite 580EXII...

thats the humble setup i shoot with, my legs are my zoom...lol..:embrass:

whats normal, is using your gear to realize your ideas :)

The lenses I use the most are probably these
EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

But depending on the circumstances, I also use some other lenses, like
EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
EF-S 60mm f/2.8 macro USM
EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM
EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM

I've found that all of these work well with the 7D. Except the 50mm, which focuses way off, but since it's a prime, I was capable of fixing that with the micro adjustment.

My primary lens is 600mm..

Hi, do we get the extra mm by mounting the EF-S lens to 7D? Thanks.:)
