CMOS is actually an older technology...just that at the early stage of development, it could not compare to quality of CCDs in terms of noise and colour...nowadays, there is not much seperating the quality and colour of either chip...go for the camera that feels right in your hands in terms of handling, build quality, intuitive usage and layout :)

Agree. Shoot a scenic, and the mountain also won't scream "CMOS!" or "CCD!".

If it handles well, and feels 'right' in your hands, go for it. And this is coming from a Canon user. ;)

Of course, dream combination would be 1DmkIIn's speed, Fuji's sensor, and Nikon's interface. :bsmilie:

CMOS is actually an established technology for semiconductors, but only recently it was used for imaging. CCD has been a very established technology for imaging especially for video since tubes were replaced.

maddyks.....u buy D80 already over wkend?

No bro, haven't yet. Actually deciding between Harvey Norman and Cathay as the others don't have a good installment scheme.

Yo Maddyks! Just some more things to consider for u...

1) I'm not sure wat's the price Harvey gave u (is it at RRP of S$2288?) :dunno: , but if u are willing to bargain, Harvey can also match the price of the other shops (wat u have to do is ASK them BOLDLY, not rudely though ;p ).

I recently bought a point-and-shoot Nikon S4 from Harvey (at Millenia Walk), and because I asked and bargained, I got a brand new set (not display set) at S$449, instead of the RRP of S$699  ! I can send u a copy of the receipt to prove it. And wat's great is they allowed me to pay for it using credit card without extra charge! So, if u have a supplementary credit card, maybe there are those 0% installments by different banks. Even if not paying by credit card, I should think u'll be able to get a good price and installment plan at Harvey. To those reading this and still do not know, the moral of the story is Harvey also can bargain ;) .

2) MS Photo at AMK had a promotion (not sure if it's still on) for D80 bundle. S$2288 and u'll get the D80+kit lens, a dry CABINET (electrical type, not dry box), 2pcs 1GB SD card (normal speed), tripod, Nikon shoulder bag. U'll definitely need the dry cabinet for your D80, because it is a small price to pay to protect your big investment. I think they might give u a good installment plan if u take the entire bundle, since u are paying S$2288.

Btw, I called MS asking about this promotion only. They say they dont have any more promotions  Also installment they say is extra 5%....

Tips for bargaining at Harvey (or anywhere else, for that matter):

1) Don't appear as if u can't do without the thing. Tell yourself u can get it elsewhere if they dun give u good $.

2) Do your homework, know the price that authorized dealers are selling it. Harvey guys might tell u that the cheaper sellers are not authorized, so u dun have warranty, which is of course not true. MS, AP, Lord's are all authorized dealers. So tell the Harvey people u can get warranty set at these places at much lower prices.

3) "Por" them a bit and say that because these places dun give good installment plan, so if Harvey can match their price with good installment, then u'll buy from Harvey. But dun let them know that u dun have money for 1 entire payment, so they'll think u might really go elsewhere buy if they dun match the price.

4) Normally, salesman cannot decide, so tell them nicely to ask their manager for best price, and u'll be in for a pleasant surprise!

Yea i got a quote from her. And I'm thinking I'll go for it. It includes:

1. Nikon D80 kit
2. 2 GB high speed Kingston SD card
3. Digicab 30L dry cabinet
4. 2nd original battery
5. 123 photo imaging software
6. Cleaning kit
7. Nikon umbrella
8. Nikon bag.

The price in all is 2288$ (incl. GST) and can be put on 0% installment for OCBC, POSB, DBS, UOB, Diner club cards.

She doesnt include tripod though and kind of makes sense to me as I would want a slightly heavier tripod to support the cam and lens.

So, is it ok? Or is there something I can try to include or bargain on price? Or do you think that buying separately would be a better deal.

Thanks

thread move to consumer corner.

Buying separate is always better. For a feel of the prices, consider the following:

1) 2GB Kingston SD card - S$40 (I think their "high speed" is only 50X)
2) 30l dry cabinet - S$70
3) Original Nikon EN-EL3e battery - S$80 (u sure they said it's original?)
4) Nikon bag - S$20
5) The rest not really important.

So altogether S$1950 kit + (1)-(4) = S$2160, but they charging u S$2288. However, since u dun have enough cash to pay 1 shot, the $2288 package seems like best deal already, with 0% installment on credit. I dun think MS will let u bargain on the $2288 package, but u can try.

Hi,

I am thinking of buying the d80 around this weekend as well. Also from MS i guess. Maybe we can go together and bargin with them even more??
