ED elements will not magically make better lenses.

Nahhhhh....we are more enticed by VR n AFS. Not ED.

Not gonna make an unspectacular lens spectacular.. though I have no doubt it'll appeal to quite a lot of people.

i wonder how it'll match up against my beloved 24-85 f/2.8-4... other the smaller aperture that is...

My question to Nikon :

WHY NO DSLR?
:dunno:

:bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

well the D100 is still an option... i would really hate it if they announce a successor to the D100 so soon, and unless they got some super-duper full-frame successor to D1x... ....

i'm more interested in what new stuff Fuji is rolling out actually... the improved dynamic range CCD looks fairly promising.

Actually, I was hoping for D2, D200, S3 Pro, etc. Then I can get used D1X, D100, S2 Pro for cheap cheap. :)

Not a "me too", this one goes down to 24! They are taking one not-so-good lens and try to make it more palatable by adding ED and VR. I'll give it a pass. :D

Well, I don't think Nikon will skimp on feasible enhancements over the original design especially when it involves two of their major technologies, VR and SWM. Though I do not like to speculate on an untested product, I do have great confidence in this lens.

It is not fair to put it down with a one-liner remark, we should see it for ourselves first before making our comments. Like the AF-S 24-85, this one may just be another one to surprise the market with the price and performance to match.

The AF-S 24-85 isn't a great lens either; I prefer the older but far better 28-105.

Also having AF-S and VR doesn't imply it's good. The Canon 75-300 IS USM is a case in point.

How about a "has-been"?

It may not be great to you but it does offer countless serious amateurs with an option to own a AF-S lens that has more than decent performance and speed. Sure, it ain't an AF-S 28-70 f/2.8 but comparatively, let's ask how much does it cost?

Like always, one may be a professional but please do expect everyone to be on the same level. Pro or amateur, everyone has to start somewhere, ain't it? :)

There are better ways to start on. I'm expecting a $700-800 or even more price tag on this lens. For people who just want a single lens it is great, for the rest there're better pickings for less.

i'm curious as to why they decided to develop a F75... isn't the F65 - F80 range well covered already? :dunno:

The F75 is worse off than the old F70 in several ways, the first things i noticed were 1/90 synch speed, 1.5 fps, iso cannot be set manually

of course, the engineers at Nikon decided that what you really need instead is mid-roll rewind

Based on picture I guess this lens will be completely different with 24-120D since it has SWM motor........the design won't be same with it's predecessor. I just wish Nikon correct the distortion at 24mm issue on AFS 24-85 and maintain sharpness level as AFS 24-85.
$700~800 for this lens is going to be a bang for buck.........

Hopefully so, but I don't think it is going to be $700 - $800 but rather, a little over a thousand here. :)

Design wise, I really hope they can match this with the excellent price performance design of the AF-S 24-85 with the quality to match a VR lens. Let's see what can it do first before deciding but heck, having a little more choices won't hurt. (well, except the wallet) ;P
