Do you have a chance to compare how is this compared to your 5N?

In terms of noise control, low light resolution, etc.?

Rashkae did a comparison in the reviews section.

Quite impressed with the camera so far... brought it out on a couple of street photography walks.

hope i m not hijacking this thread, i just got my RX100 on Saturday after visiting the local ( guangzhou ) camera shop and just loved this tiny cam ! I have a 50D thats sitting like a white elephant inside my drybox as i seldom use it due to size. Went looking for a PNS after my trusty Ricoh R7 died on me after 6 years or so 2 months ago. Considered the Nikon P310 as pictures were good . However its this little cam that got my wife's approval albeit more pricey :) - MTL faster buy ! got it here in Guangzhou for 3780 RMB or SGD $765 standard package - its a great camera for a newbie like me and i m lovin it !

Sorry for the late reply. Am traveling in the US right now. It's as good as the 5N with the 18-55 kit zoom in terms of dynamic range and low light ability. The 18-55 is a slower lens with a bigger sensor, while the RX100 has a faster lens with a smaller sensor, so in terms of DOF & low light ability, they are remarkably the same except that the RX100 probably has the edge at 28mm EFL in low light. I think Sony has improved the noise control over the 5N, but its possibly with some loss of detail. For me, its the perfect holiday camera and great for biking as it fits in my tiny rear carry pouch. The 20MP is an advantage over the 5N for cropping, but just slight. There is an unusually good implementation of digital zoom, which I never bothered to use before this camera.

Some indoor shots from the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, NY. The pictures actually look much better than the scene as seen by the eyes, which was very dark

Super nice! Are these HDR or just high ISO? WOW!

I have been using ACR 7.2 to process some RX100 RAW files. 14-21 have processed with 7.2. The improvement over Sony's IDC is obvious. 7.2 is able to recover highlights where IDC was unable to recover any details. See here, Zenfolio | N.S. Ng | Sony RX100 Sample Photos. No.13 was processed with IDC to tiff to CS6 for post processing then to jpeg. Look at the lhs above the waterline. No. 17 was processd with ACR and it looks better. Similarly with photos 12 and 20, the latter processed with ACR. However, there is not much gain in resolution in going from jpeg to RAW. Despite the fact, there are details in the shadow areas, these tend to have some noise. Therefore, shadow recovery is certainly not as good when comparing to RAW files from larger sensors. This can be see in the lower lhs in 14 and 20. With my M8 or A850, I believe I can recover more details with less noise. 1-9 are straight jpegs, except 5 which is from RAW using IDC.

HDR mode can help in some of these situations, but only in jpeg.

They are just high ISO in the default DRO mode. I find the shadow detail amazing for a compact, but the sensor does blow highlights - a compromise that I'm happy to live with. Also, the lens is super sharp. While I was shooting, some guy next to me was commenting that all his pictures were coming out black. I just smiled.

some sample images taken on my RX100 - first time when i stepped out with it
btw, i shot in bright sunlight, and never really had a problem using the LCD. i've not shot with a good compact in a long time so i cant really say how this screen compares to the rest - but many users were worried that the LCD will be hard to use in sunlight...for me, no issue at all
