Love this friendly bird on low cherry trees as it makes handholding my Pentax M 200f4 (300+gm)very comfortable.

I shoot raw and spot metering. Very little processing except a little tone curve and contrast set to zero in CS5. 5N spot metering is good for small subjects like birds as it totally disregard the other surrounding. Since I was using a 200f4 lens set to f8, I used shutter priority 1/500 and auto ISO. Some of the same set of photos showed ISO 160 but when the subject is black, the ISO can go up to 3200. I wish the auto ISO can be controlled. It was also a very bright day.

I keep seeing people commenting on how bad the kit lens (18-55mm) is. My own copy of lens however did not fail me on my road trip, surviving bumpy and extreme temperature changes. I find its sharpness and and distortion acceptable (not pixel peeping!) and colors are very pleasing! All images are shot JPEG and have no PP done! All straight from camera! Seems like this combination (5N + 18-55) is going to be a citizen soon in my cabinet!

A few more images straight from the 5N and 18-55 lens on bokeh and some close-ups. No PP and shot in JPEG.

Some bird shots with Minolta 250mm mirror lens with 5N (from another thread). Anyone knows what is this bird?

Not sure where your question is

How did you manage to get so close to it?

Even getting close with a 200mm lens (i guess) is not easy.

She was on a very low cherry tree, barely 3 metres away from me. I love to sit comfortably below these trees and wait and I was wearing a dull green t-shirt. My 200f4 can MFD to less than 2 metres. The photo is also about a 28% crop.
