Photos taken by Pentax cameras for tech. discussion - Season VII

My 1st birding this year, shot 1 day before the eve of CNY.

#1 After 3yrs this migratory bird finally landed again in the same old location of SBG. :)

#2 My 1st lifer this year - Cut-Throat Finch. The adult male has a bright red band across its throat, thus the naming "cut-throat".

#3 While waiting to shoot the Cut-Throat Finch I was too early and the afternoon sun was so hot and harsh that I rested under the shelter of the Pasir Ris Park Mangroove waiting for time to pass, down there I saw this White Collared Kingfisher diving into the water but not fishing, knowing his habits he will dive another time, so I aimed around the 1st diving area and got this:

#4 The happiest shot was this Puffy Fish Owl, not only it's hard to shoot an owl but the pose of him landing on the open ground with wings spread open is really very rare.

Glad I took leave on that day to have this fruitful trip.

All nice!
Glad it turned out well for the first serious birding outing for the year. :)

BTW, how close are you usually?
The Cut-Throat Finch is so small, I'd guess you need to get real close or crop a lot.

Ken, simply wonderful bird images as usual.

Thanks JK, for bird #1 and #2, I was few meters away.
For the kingfisher I was 20+ meters away, hence the pic is heavily cropped even with a 500mm + 1.4x TC.
For the owl I estimate about 15m away, with the 1.4x TC and the bird is quite big + with his wings spread I can shoot almost 100% crop.
You are right, the Cut-Throat finch is very small, about the size of sunbird, luckily they are quite friendly so I can shoot them within few meters away. :)

Thanks Dennis, have not seen your posting for a long time. :o

Thanks for the info.

BTW, you can try KTPH, they installed some fake islands on the pond and water birds go there.
There are also quite a few species of birds. (including some of these Finches )

While it may not have the best edge to edge resolution, its still plenty on 24mp FF.
But what does this lens have above other makes?
Size (yes, it does not break the back unlike more 'macho' options), good contrast and micro contrast, nice colors.
