Photos taken by Pentax cameras for tech. discussion - Season VII

Felix bro, u can level up too....there is one selling now. Go go go :)

The macro shots here are an inspiration to dust off my stuff and give it a try.

Since its a regular walk with the kids (too late for serious macro as it was 10am), I just grabbed a Q7+06 zoom+Hoya +4 close up filter, and a A4 paper as diffuser.
Butterflies were too skittish with the heat and I only had like 10mins, so settled for dragonflies instead. :)

The more recent Nikon 58/1.4 lens is a lens of a similar vein (a portrait orientated longish 50mm, with the same sort of optical characteristics)
That lens goes for probably $1800.

This one is smaller and goes for like what? $580? (that guy was selling; about $1K new)
Sometimes, I feel that we really don't give our own stuff the respect they deserve.

Yes, I fully agree. The hand-me-downs on BnS are real value for money considering the fact that new Pentax lenses cost a bomb..... :)

I owned the DA 55mm f/1.4 twice and I liked it a lot but it was a sleeper of a lens because when it first came out the common criticism of the lens were:

- it was expensive compared to the FA 50mm f/1.4, the DA 50mm f/1.8 is even cheaper. How to sell a lot when Pentax users not willing to pay for that price for a lens body that's polycarbonate plastic? I felt the build quality was good enough.
- there was the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 which was just as good but with slightly different color rendering (funnily enough I kept the big bodied Sigma)
- there was the Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 manual focus lens that had better build quality and cheaper with color that's just as good (I regretted letting go of it but old guy like me needs AF)
- competes closely with the FA Limiteds (FA 43mm and FA 77mm) and to a lesser extent the DA 70mm Limited
- many felt the SDM focusing was slower than screw drive
- many were spooked by SDM motor failure
- some experienced focusing errors (my first copy was average, my second copy was sent back to Japan for calibration). With the newer camera bodies this might not be an issue. IMO I sense the lens does exhibit slight focus shift at different distances.
That said the images from the DA 55mm are great, just that as a value proposition, I lost money trying to sell it when I switched systems.

The comparison with the Nikkor 58mm f/1.4G may or may not be valid, especially where price is concerned. There is always a premium when buying Nikkor lenses new. Nowadays Pentax lenses are dirt cheap because the demand and user base is a lot smaller as few want to invest in the system. The 58mm f/1.4G Nikkor is milking that kind of price because it is supposed to replace the old and legendary 58mm f/1.2 Noct which I think it has done. The coma correction is definitely there on the Noct, but you're paying a lot for that kind of bokehlicious performance. The DA 55mm isn't as well corrected for coma. Better to compare the DA 55mm with the more common Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G which has similar performance, build quality, quiet focusing and ahem, it's cheaper too!

Now obviously as Pentax hasn't come up with a FF sensor model yet, so one will be using that 55mm focal length on a cropped sensor. Compare it with the Nikon 85mm f/1.8G or Canon 85mm f/1.8 on a FF sensor and I think the results are pretty close. Just my opinion.

#94 CBD Night View

This photo was taken a few years back . Wanted to retake it again as my buddy accidentally kick my tripod after his camera go battery flat at that time and it's spoil some of my blending shots . However that place was close shortly after that .
This is what happen when you miss yr old camera and lens. Re-look at my archive folder today . With some magic , manage to salvage it. Hope you guys like it .
