yeah, true too.

Fish jumping shots are doable when we do pre-focus (watch where the fishing line go before the jump). I normally choose AFS. AFC may be too late unless the size of the fish is large like a Sailfish. Also got to get close to water level so a WR body and lens make sense.

Another interesting thing is that my K5 'suddenly' AF pretty well. In the past when the shutter is pressed it will just go for it even when it is not in focus. Now no matter how I press the shutter button the priority is 'focus' first before firing away. And interestingly the DAL35 focuses a hair faster than the 18-135. I think it all boils down to focus throw?

on AF.S, it also depends on whether u set the camera on "focus priority" or "release priority". on focus priority, the shutter cannot be released until subject is in focus. on "release priority", the camera will just machine gun away... ;p

focus throw is definitely one of the factors for AF speed - if u try it with the DA35 Macro LTD for example, u'll definitely see a difference. its simple a matter of using different lenses to meet different needs.

i've not used the 18-135 before but i thot that its one of the better performing lenses AF-wise, with the new DC motor... your observation is certainly interesting.

Ranchy - haha, maybe angry fish game is on the horizon.... shooting down anglers above trying to hook them!

Detritus - Yes, I have played with the 2 options on AFS and AFC. For those who tried, the K5 is super competent for sports.

Batu Caves -pano

Pano stitch of 5 frames

Didn't have much time to shoot by myself during a short weekend in M'sia.
Accompanying family meant I just did the obligatory tourist shot of the cave front and hopped back into the car.
This started off with the intention of a HDR pano stitch, but in the end the HDR had nothing much more to offer in the dark parts.

Toh you are welcomed.
Basically your pics are under exposed.
The framing of #1 and #2 is good.
For #3 I would wait for the bird to turn its face with eye contact. Try to frame/capture including the tail.
If this bird is your new capture you may keep for record shot else wait for better background/perch the next capture.
#4 Asian Brown Flycatcher, I believe this is one of your 1st few shots when we 1st spotted. This bird is rather friendly and it stayed for a while (1-2mins?). Not sure if you have other shots but this period of time is sufficient for you to frame for better background.
Just to share with you this bird with green background. I didn't keep this shot though as the eye contact is not good.

Hi Vincent, your birdie #13 is detailed and sharp, it will be better if the eye "glows".
Bird#16 I find the crop too tight, you may want to apply rule of 3rd for this pic. The background is not interesting, look for some earthy clean background.

Share with you one with green background and glowing eyes:

Shooting birds is also good to understand the bird's habit and behaviour.
For pacific swallow they hardly perch on tree/branches, they love to perch on signboards (which I'll usually give a pass), rocks and sticks/pole. When u see one perched on a pole/stick, shoot 1st and slowly approach nearer. If they flew off, be patient and wait, they will come back again. I have shots of full frame with DA*300 w/o any TC. With the behaviour of this bird, you can achieve the following shots.

Very entertaining final indeed. Choi and Feng were watching intently while Angela missed the chance to hole it and ended up with a 4 way play off! But really, Michelle Wie looks like a model until she swears!

i'm actually wondering if we should consider an alternative approach to macro, like go at night, settle down somewhere, set up with tripod and lights, lure insects to come, and then take what comes our way.

i get the feeling that walking ard in the dark with torchlight, we catch some, but we miss quite a lot also. more static setup can allow us to control the lighting better (with LED lights, umbrellas, wireless triggers, etc). and marcus can use his A200 to its fullest advantage
