took this second shot with vivitar maro 105, twin flashlights used with kirk macro bracket, jsut received off flash adapter. Still some slight shadows on the lower backside:bsmilie:

More experimenting to go.

the kirt macro bracket is working well. but i always find shadow for small (less than 5mm) and low crouching animals like the spider with the shadow at the backside. Maybe need to work on the different angle of lighting.

the weevil is much better. i have yet to find and shoot a weevil. great capture!

a lot of pixel in your pix... 70% crop and the spider is still so sharp!

Second time seeing this type of weevil and probably today better prepared with monopod and kirk macro bracket. See, the leaf is greenish and the light was shot with 1/8 or 1/16 power. Too much of flash light power resulted in white spots/specks on leaf surface.

Agree, still adjusting on the angle of lights and diffusers, to reduce to the minumum, the dark shadows. .. Tks for your comment. I am learning too.

Add another diffuser (non-slip rubber) to the plate diffuser. same setup, K20D with tamron 90 + ext tube. hot spots on the ant heads are quite terrible.

learned something from you. white spot from strong flash. i tried f16 with 1/2 flash power for this shot.

think the f-stop is still not enough with the ants sharp but the aphids blur. still learning....

btw, where did you find the weevil?

Even lighting but more towards yellowish than greenish, probably increasing shutter speed to have the greenish effect of leaf. Just a tot cos I am having that for my KX than K10d.

For the ants, the focus being the top part of the ants and aphids are located lower. Dun think you can have aphid in sharp focus, even if you stop down. If you can stitched ie two different focal point, one for ants and one for aphid.... by the way I have never try before:bsmilie:

Weevil, found in jalan tenteram field near to the ECP Kim keat ave.

This shot on ants and aphids is nice.

sharing such nice pixs & giving great tips for us to learn..keep it up..

need some guidance from macro masters here..
i do not have budget for a flashgun, how do u use the built-in flash to it's fullest in shooting macro?

most of us macro shooters here are still learning, trying to better the skills...

try a diffusers for the camera flash, just a clip and you can buy in mass sale. See fei used the char bee hoon polyurethane white plate. You can try that and I think it works although at lesser power.:)

you do not need very high power flash gun. the in-built flash can do with a good diffuser. a good diffuser can be just your throw-away disposal plastic plate. this photo was taken with the diffuser & in-built flash

its not likely to have the aphids in focus since using ext tubes, even f22 might not make it... those doing extreme close up uses focus stack to achieve it... single shot is not likely to achieve it...

Can join National Geographic.:bsmilie:

nat geo is pathetic nowadays. the copy is so thin. guess the amateur and the bloom of online information and graphic website is killing the photograph-rich mag biz :(.

if i really go pro one day, i will start by looking at online model like this. working for sir d.attenborough will be really cool! :)

I'm no expert at macro photography or even photography in general but I thought your photos with the soft shadows look much more pleasing to me than the harsh shadows on the link you provided.

Finally got my 12-24 and decide to go and take some pics tat very night..never bring a tripod so hv to push my iso up to 3200..so far i am quite happy with the lens :D

you are right, the photography in the website is not very good. but richard seaman, the author of the website is very good with knowledge of insects. he may need a photography director like me to complement him :bsmilie:
