Farhan, i love this lighting, dark and mystic, also the black leather reflection stands out.

Thanks Charlie. I can't believe I forgot to remind you about this. A thousand apologies. :embrass:

Well done!
I can see that the effect is what you've always mentioned :)

Seems like this Cosfest trip was very worth it.

Thanks JK. Apart from lighting, it took an appropriate character/pose/angle to get things right. I could have used another technical director on the scene. ;)

Would like to share some shots taken at Sentosa Butterfly Park with the DFA 100mm WR.

shot with voigtlander PP with picassa but uncropped; Personally, my personal preference for K10d colors as Kx colors are more washed, softer or something to that effect. Maybe there are some settings I have not touch on, still exploring. K10 d is with Doctor kelvin for check-up. lol.

Sharing some of the shots I took in Cairo, Egypt after the end of a working trip there last year. ... all shot with kit lens 18-55mm before I upgraded to Sigma 17-70mm. Hope you like 'em!

Wow, Marvin, these are all great shots. Simply excellent travel photography images.
#1 is excellent in composition and in the B&W rendering.
#2 subject is well positioned. Balance of the soft and the hard surroundings.
#3 is a fantastic shot. Great composition, lovely tones, exposure spot on and the perspective is just right. An excellent example of why it is sometimes better not to have an ultra wide.
#4 superb exposure and composition angle. The dome is counterbalanced by the circle arabic crest and triangle.
#5 exposure is just right and the backlighting and slight flare conveys a natural lead-in for the eye. Simply conveys great mood.

Great series, another example to show that it's not abt the lens but the person behind the viewfinder :thumbsup:

Just curious if any filter was used in this shot? I love the sky as it seems very nicely exposed together with the citadel.

Thanks, Denis... compliments coming from sifu, I'm really flattered!

Brianskivvy, thanks! I did not use any special filter apart from the normal UV filter. I did some post-processing though, adjust the curve and level to achieve the right amount of contrast and a bit of sharpening with unsharp mask.

I am more used to colors of K10d, these are from Kx and I find the colors more washed out.

Same model:bsmilie: faithful one, very still and i tot injured. 1 st shot without flash lights iso 1200.

2 nd and 3 rd shot, with flashlights (one only at hotshoe mounted).

So now, I am looking for K20d.

Thanks! most of my shots were just instinctive snapshots but I do take special care in composition and exposure (shoot in M and AV depending on the lighting conditions). Perhaps being finally there for the first time after reading so much and seen Egypt on travel mags and TV, it really blew me away especially seeing the Great Pyramid with my own eyes.

For #1 - Since it is THE place to go when visiting Egypt, I tried to capture it from a different angle than those seen in travel shots, usually in landscape orientation. So, I shot in vertical with the rocks on the foreground and mid-ground serve as interesting pattern with the diagonal line leading the viewer's eyes.

For #2 - I like horses, and shot it quickly just in time before the owner led them away to find gullible tourists to ride on them. But I think he had a hard time, most tourists would opt for camel rides instead.

For #3 - This is inside the Citadel, the whole architecture of the place is simple amazing! I was taking pictures of the beautiful dome, looking up all the time and almost missed this shot if I didn't turn around. It was almost sunset time and the lights shining through that door was superb! With the many tourists gather around the entrance, it's just perfect setting to get the backlit subjects and soft long shadows.

I have a few more pics of this trip posted in the Land/City-scapes and Travel gallery

Thanks for sharing. Your control of exposure and composition is superb. It is never easy to to take B&W as subject matter need to be strong for the photograph to work. I am still learning and am very impressed with the work you have done with just a kit lens.

will keep a look out for more of your work!

#2 He ain't heavy he is my brother

took these two photographs at the Bukit Batok Nature Park yesterday after the rain stopped. Cant seems to get the details of the bugs' body all sharp. Lighting is always a problem as can be seen from the harsh shadow in the first pic.

Would welcome all comments!

Taken with K20D and tamron 90. Off camera flash with DIY diffuser.

Seefei,

The DOF is thin for macro. not possible to have sharpness across the whole frame unless you take a few shots of different point of focus and stiched or stacks for bugs. For the shadow, probably you need another flash to llighten it.

The second stilt fly, you nailed the angle beautifully. The vertical stem is a distraction to the right of the image. Here again, in macro, sometimes you don't have a lot of choice as the external environment is not control by you.

NIce shot anyway. :)

Did you step down to at least f8.0?
Should have made use of the Ring Flash that you have.

I took these 2 with Ring Flash with minimized shadow, although improvement still needed.

Thank you bro OTC and Pentriot!

on the DOF, i think i will experience with the aperture control. currently using f8 and pushing to f16 in some cases for those really small insects (<5mm). But can really go too far with the aperture as more illumination is required. i usually use 1/4 to 1/8 manual flash bounce but for really small insect i shoot direct at the little fella and that is when i get real harsh shadow like here.

Pentriot, the reason i am not using the ring light is the front attachment. The ring obstructs my lens as i am using a tamron 90 with tube and really need to get real close to the models. The ring make me lose some distance between the lens and the model. I am trying out a new diffuser and see how it goes. Thanks for the advice. BTW, your stilt flies are really big. shot with the big MA again?

OTC, as to focus stacking i tried but no results. The model moved :bsmilie: Maybe for flowers but not bugs. Will play around with the aperture and lighting control. Looking forward to the arrival of your new bracket and shooting together.

Cheers!!

No, the stilt flies were shot with A100mm f2.8 Macro.:)
