T R A V E L O G U E ~ Day 6 - Vietnam-China Border at Lao Cai

For travellers to Lao Cai (again, a reminder: pronounced Lao KAI. Not to be confused with the Lao Chai Village.)
it would be good to make a short trip to the Highway Bridge between Yunan, China and Vietnam.
This bridge crosses the Hong He (Red River) that splits the Vietnam-China border.
If anything, at least one could give oneself a pat on the shoulder and say:
"Hey, I have been to the Vietnam-China border right at the northern tip of Vietnam...!"

After our Bac Ha Market and Ban Pho Village, our minibus took the 1 hour drive to Lao Cai again to allow us the honour of viewing this scene.
At around 4:00pm, we arrived.

Our first glimpse of Hekou 河口 in Yunnan 云南, China.
Honestly, I never thought I would see this sight in my life.
Fancy looking afar towards China from the northern border of Vietnam...
I could imagine how much history this border had seen.

Just to behold this politically and historically significant sight, it is well worth the 1 hour drive from Sapa to Lao Cai.

I believe my sentiment of awe was echoed by many amongst our team.
Because I could see, gradually, one by one the team members making their way slowly down the steps to lean against the railing along the bank.
Cameras were raised and aims taken at the far bank.
Imagine if I were a People's Republic of China's resident over at the other side,
every day there would be hordes of awed foreigners taking aim at me...

"Errr.... own people...??"

I spied Acpical stealthily approaching a perceived enemy subject hiding under some bushes.
Slowly, the predator shooter inched his way closer, contorting his body in all possible fashion...
...until the subject is just within sight and within the shooting range of his weapon.

Next step:
Acpical will post his photo of this technically highly difficult shot.
Right, Apic?

Hehehe....
Another no-bright-sunlight-afternoon.
Not the best for IR.
But still, never hurt to give it a shot... hehehe...

Here I am doing a comparison.
A shot with a normal colour camera, and another shot with the IR camera.

This is the temple that sits facing the Vietnam-China Border.
I don't know what is the English name, but the Chinese name translation is The Temple of the Mother of the Nation.

T R A V E L O G U E ~ Day 6 - Sapa Walk-around Night Street Photography

So after dinner, Adrian said:
"It's been a tiring day. Those of you who wants to rest can rest.
Those who want to go for a 80,000 Dong whole body massage just down the road, can go.
Those hard-core ones who want to follow me for night street photography - let's meet at lobby at 7:30pm."

Yah yah yah... meet at the lobby...
I was wearing a pair of flip flop. What a big mistake!
My first step down the front slippery steps of the lobby I did a spectacular half somersault.
Adrian, Acpical and SereneXMM could do nothing to help in that split second, but could only
feast their eyes upon one of the most perfectly executed gymnastic moves I have ever made in my entire life.
Luckily I didn't break my camera.
But I got my second present from Sapa - a big swollen bruise on my back-buttock that lasted until even now as I typed this sentence (11 days after the fall... hehehe...)

limwhow #181

Yah... Stevepow - very encouraging yah, hor?!
My backside painful already, still play badminton?
This Stevepow... he must have been so tickled by my fall... My second one on the slippery floors of Sapa.

A few shops down the same back lane, we came upon a flight of steps with a nice street lamp as back-lighting.
There was no passers-by. So poor Divinemoment got deployed to pretend to be the model and walk up the steps.
But soon, a few genuine local passers-by came and he got over-shadowed.

This is just a smaller-size, clickable repeated image of that scene I have shown earlier on.

We saw a few street vendors with all styles of street food. And most memorably,
half-cut carcasses of piglets hung snout upwards on vertical poles. Eeewww.... first time I saw that.
And here... hmmm... beautiful food... by equally admirable cooks.

We walked past the Sapa Night Market, past by the Sapa Chapel and came to a row of road side stalls.
Our very observant team mates noticed a good scene of a sweet corn seller who was squatting by the road side.
Helen, Chubbykei excitedly whipped out their machines.
Acpical and Adrian were still contemplating the best angle for the shoot.

limwhow #186

After a while, we realised that there was a customer that was obstructing the lady seller.
How? Valiantly, Adrian walked up to the seller, bought a sweet corn and... er...
diplomatically asked the female customer to excuse herself from our frames of view... hehehe...

limwhow #187

Here is my version of that sweet corn seller lady.
This one is with the other customer in the frame.
But I guess ok lah... it also portrays its own story.
Hey you ladies and gentlemen who have the 'customer-less' version, please post and share!

We came to the Chapel in Sapa Town, just across the road from the Night Market.
All of us were busy looking for angles.

limwhow #189

My humble version of the Chapel.
If you examine carefully, you will notice a ghostly figure standing right near the entrance of the Chapel struggling with something in its hands...
Until today we are all still wondering if it could possibly be Adrian?
