Hey... I'm sorry if I offended you, but that's not my intention.

I think there's no need to be harsh to any potential organiser who pose here. Every event and organiser has a certain budget and there will always be photographers who dont mind having a try. Let the free market dictate.

true true...
but i still support the viewpoint of Lumiere... hehehe

Hey... I'm sorry if I offended you, but that's not my intention.

so what's ur intention then?

i'm for the idea of having a free choice to whether one wants to take up a job at any rates, but i think some education needs to be done for both the organiser and photographer.

if a photog has any pride in her work at all, or thinks that he/she is just worth $150, go ahead.

btw to kevyan, are u a professional photographer? I'm just curious. :)

If it's a free market, then on an equal basis, I think we have a right to free speech as well.

Our comments need not be scathing or abrasive, but in all fairness, we should be given a right to air our views as well in this 'free-market', just as the TS is free to state whatever terms and conditions he or she wants, and for anyone to feel free to take-up or reject it.

It would be entirely different IF the TS has paid an exclusive fee to advertise, and part of the exclusivity is that no one is allowed to speak freely in the advertising thread.

Considering that freelance or part-time event photographers rates' go anything from $80 - $150 / hr and one professional's rates can go as high as $500/hr with conditions, it is my opinion that $150 for 9 hours' work ($16.66 per hour) is way too low to justify requesting for a 'photographer'.

If the request were for a student, hobbyist or beginner who wants to gain experience and with no professional obligation to deliver quality, or something along those lines, such an offer seems more balanced with the attendant $16.66 being an 'allowance'.

These are my opinions.

actually thats wat i meant...just tt i kept it much shorter...but not so sweet thats all

events rates are from $50 to $150 per hr, and $150 fo 9hrs are way too low. consider the fact the equipment, transport, batteries and after shoot give dvds etc....

I see it this way. For $150, TS will get someone who produces $150 worth of work. Whether TS is ready to accept $150 worth of work is entirely up to him/her. For that someone who accepts the job, you'll find out how much you are worth...... $150. Guess who stand to gain.

i'll take it for $150. i'll assign my team of 'photographers' to cover the events. deal?

Unfortunately, exploitation exist everywhere.

Even in govt services try, gebiz. They wil tell you to quote based on per pax eg 300 pax then when get the deal, they tell you sorry hor only 120 pax. So you LL if you reject after they "select you" you may be blacklisted.

So this case here is no exception.

In all fairness, even in this free market, photographers here esp new ones need to be "educated" on what is exploitation so that at least they have some self respect, be it part timer, student etc etc.

The thing is, everyone keeps on saying it's a free market here in CS.

In order to keep it that way, all parties should have an equal right to air their views. If the members speech is clamped down and censored, it becomes a state of Dictatorship.

It might be best to approach similar things in a reasonable and matured manner, and express our views in a factual and thought-out way without getting aggressive. I don't think that the TS or the Admin/Mods here are unreasonable people.

Indeed, so the members shd be allowed to post negative comments on such, so long no personal attacks.

Infact, quite sick as ppl knows that this is exploitation, yet still insist free markets, let free lancers and newbie take the job to learn.

Like kevyan, who posted here, let those interested do it, but that's wrong, why, there will be numerous riduculous offer appearing, and thus never end.

The newbies and free lancers dun deserve such crap in the first place. If nobody teaches and guide, they will remain exploited, and who will gain?

For those who wants to buliding portfolios, forget it, events portfolios are almost not exsisted, as how many times i been asked to show my events works, i tell u, honestly, swear to god, none.

True true. But most newbies lack confidence to dare to charge at certain amount. So in this area, they will need experienced photographers to advice them. They have to be educated about the time they put in to process the pictures and their time covering the event.
Question is, how to educate them? by what means?

Couldn't have said it better.

But again, in fairness, there are some rare organisers or those seeking photographers who may not have any idea whatsoever of equipment and operating costs. IIRC, one photographer here in CS I think did a break-down and spelt out in detail why even an Event photographer charging $150/hr is working at a nett loss. (If anyone has a link to that breakdown, can please send to me?)

We shouldn't jump on their heads for not knowing, but should diplomatically inform them of the prevalent Event Photography rate ranges (based on what is stated here in CS, generally).

If the link appeared, then good, as whenever such threads appeared, we link to the thread.

this is what I want to see . all these advices are so valuable for the freelances and those who are inexperiences in this area

May be a good idea is to have some sort of advice thingy where newbies who wants to enter the market- select from a list of full time photographers to be their adviser or something. This may help. But that means, more work for the moderator. Oppsss, I didn't mean to:( , But just a suggestion;)
