noticed quite a few photo sharing threads in the equipment sharing subforum, especially the canon one. can the mods advise whether such threads should be limited to the galleries? i don't understand why threads such as "450 CLUB - PICTURES" or "1000D photo C&C" are allowed under equipment sharing (even stickied) when there are subforums such as Critique Corner and APAD for photo sharing.

Thanks for the headsup. Likely we have not been very active in advocating that images should be posted in the respective galleries by genre and not in the equipment discussion section.

We will be drawing up some guidelines and will update soon.

it may be an issue but in another sense it's not as well - most people post their images up and don't post the camera make and model and lenses.

there're some who will want to see what kind of photos a camera can produce, etc, and these threads probably make up for it.

of course having too much of it is definitely a huge minus, but i guess to a certain extent it helps.

and of course, again, a counterargument would be that these people can go to some other photo sharing sites like pbase and flickr to check out the camera's photos...

so what is your problem to it? did anyone ask you to open it? or read it? the MOD was the one who set it up for us and stickied it up.. so what if your a senior member.. just show you were here giving more ' irrelevant" post such as this... so quit being an ahole if you got nothing to do.

did i saw anything about being a "senior member" or such? if you're trying to start a flame war, try other forums.

I don't see anything wrong with this bro...

if i'm a consumer, and thinking of buying a DSLR, i think these kind of threads are great.. At least it would let me decide on which Camera i prefer...

just my two cents.

yup i agree. i viewed in pics in those forums before deciding on my 1st dslr.
where else can u find consolidated pics by models other than here?

anyway, not all pics are up for critics. i'm just a hobbyist. just want to view and share pics nia.

Defend the need for the thread if you wish, but I think name calling is unnecessary.

I'm a 1000d club member. TS has lodge a complain in particular mentioning 1000D/450D threads regarding sharing photos in Equipment sharing forum and even mention names " especially canon" which i think is very biased. Running a brief search on threads in all equipment sharing forum does reveal that almost every other equipment forum has it's own photo threads.

Running a search on TS postings also revealed that he is a regular "complainer" to the mods. I gather that either he is very dedicated to CS or very KPO ( i mention names bcos he mentioned ). I joined CS and esp. Club 1000D bcos i was a newbie and was welcomed and accepted into club 1000D with alot of help and support from them. Even though i'm a 40D user now i still stay on with the club contributing in whatever i could. I think it's a good place to come in to learn and share dedicated info relating to photography. Even Canon monitor our threads regularly and even conduct outings with us. I think 1000D/450D were brought into attention bcos these 2 are among the most active threads in CS.

I do agree that our photo sharing threads seems to be in the wrong forum (equipment sharing) but then again...we were stickied by the mod!!! So is it our fault? Perhaps the admin would like to start a thread in photo galleries for different camera makes. I think that would help centralzsed alot of the scattered galleries and serve as a one stop for those who are keen to view photos under a particular make?

And i further hope that the mods/admin issue warnings or advises to threads in advance before shutting down the threads bluntly ( which happened to ours ) and the reasoning behind it. Imagine all the efforts put in submitting the photos and all the discussion going round being terminated with no notice at all???

Admin/mod pls respond...thks!

whatever you feel about this thread, there is no need to throw names at people.

post reported.

personally, there is nothing wrong with image galleries in equipment. after all, it is pretty easy to note that different brands tend to produce different colors, etc.

the only thing i do not understand is the excessive amount of chatting in the linked galleries, let's just say that i am someone who wants to see pictures from the camera, and that i go into the threads to see, i will sure get put off because i keep seeing pictures getting quoted and people talking and chatting rather than more pictures.

maybe that is something the users in these threads (and similar) can do. one or two friendly exchanges is fine, no one needs to be a net nazi, but what i see is a wee bit excessive. cheers.

Mmmm...are you sure that when you go into photo threads/galleries...you won't ask questions? You won't post praises/critics ? Or if you meet a friend there...you won't chat abit? The question is why pick on the 2 clubs??? Why mention names??? Is it bcos these 2 threads are very active and many members do come online to overchat abit now and then??? Or it's plain envy!!!

Some comments :)

I feel that such threads could be desired by users as they'll be interested in the performance of the camera/lens, and the most convenient location would be in the equipments discussion forums as it is targeted to be a showcase of equipment capability.

However, I feel that some guidelines should be implemented.

1. Clearly state the lens used as well as some exif data (If thread is specific to 1 camera). This provides more relevant information for the benefit of the consumer.

2. Pictures should be in "Full sized", or in Raw format and is unprocessed. If it is not feasible to display in CS, then a link should be provided. After all, it is equipment discussion right? What's the point of showing web-size pictures? Can one differentiate a picture between that taken by a 5D and 85mm F1.2 lens to a 1000D and a kit lens at maybe 400x600 resolution? Showing those processed picture is just a showcase of photographer's skill and tells nothing much about the equipment. Such pictures are more suitable for the respective galleries instead.

Thanks for reading. ;)

did i pick on your clubs?

you are really being so worked up, why do you have to be so defensive and rude?

my point was, what is the point of those image galleries? to post works? to praise each other? to chat? you think about it yourself, if you say that these threads are to showcase the pictures from particular brands, i am fine with that.. but if you clutter it up with buddy chatting, buddy mutual praising (hey, your shot so nice wor, blah blah blah).. then it really defeats the purpose of such a thread.

Sorry not to you...The "mention names" remark was for TS!

Even if you post urs up in Flikr...there will be ppl who will view and drop one ar 2 comments too...or do i have to put up a photo a day in critique corner???

It would be better for this discussion if there are less emotions involved. These threads are just taken as example and nobody is on the way to close these threads. No thread is above a rational discussion about it's purpose and presence.
I agree with Limsgp that the discussion should be focused on equipment. Otherwise the whole thread drifts slowly into Kopitiam style. No point flooding the thread with hundreds of snapshots from all over the world, the only justification being that a 1000D was used. That doesn't help much.
