A picture taken on a camera (analogue or digital) is a picture taken on a camera. A software is a software. When it comes to law and copyrights, these two don't mix. My point is, you own your work. And whatever software you use is your own problem. There's a clear line between these two things.
If someone 'stole' your pic, first thing you should do is call that dude up who used your pic or at least try to get a reply from them. A friendly call surely wont bite and probably could make your day. Try to come up with a deal, who knows they might be needing more. Do make constructive ideas and comments on how you should be protecting your work. If they still won't pay or ignore, write a formal letter to the editor. It might take a while but they won't ignore you.
I dont see the point in bringing up using pirated softwares or using original when it comes to protecting your OWN intellectual property in this issue. In fact the original softwares that you buy is 'technically speaking' NOT YOURS. Its licensed. So why brag about it? A picture that you took using your camera is yours and you can do whatever you want with it. See the difference.

Let's say I stole a pen, drew a picture and the picture turned out to be a 'masterpiece'. Now someone bought the picture from me for $1million, and the pen owner sues me, what will the pen owner get? Probably a short jail term on my part and maybe $5,000. But I'll still be a millionaire, because my creative work is mine, and the stolen pen is another issue.
Now, duhville is not even asking for money, just acknowledgement, how bad can that be? And does it matter that duhville might have even stolen a camera to take the picture? What's all this about pirated software, etc etc...
Duhville, please keep us informed of the outcome so that as a community, we will know how we can approach the big players when they 'shortchange' us. I find that the letter you wrote is most pleasant can certainly deserves a reply, whether positive or not. All the best for us amatuers and professionals.

maybe the use of the word "stolen" is kinda strong but i feel its that way..
what happen was that i was at an acappella competition the other day and i took pictures .. i was testing out stage photography that i was lousy at but that aside.. a reporter interview the second prize winners and wanted to do an article bout them .. and when he ask for a photo of them in the competition the group ask from me the pic to pass to this reporter .. so i gave him the photos and my name .. but later to find out that in the article he printed "story and photos by himself" ... well some ppl may think it is no big deal but i am an amature photographer and for a photo of mine to be in the papers it IS and big deal for me - something to have a big smile about the whole week ..
so what should u think i do now or what would u do if u were me .. ?

Then u should ask urself do u expect anything from them when they asked for ur photos?
Guess To them or the reporter is u gave to him out of good will and he already said thank u to u.. So U r the willing party.
Do u think He should put ur name below the picture or u expecting something like this "coutesy from blah blah blah"...
If u r not happy with this matter, just write in and ask for a compensation or wat loh..see what they can do abt this.
Dun flame me just that I thought It might be just a misunderstanding only....
So that means all pictures can belong anyone then? How do we own our own pictures? That means everything has got to be licensed or tagged? Must have official receipt, name and signature on every picture. In the future, new digital cameras will have to some thumbprint access thingy on it just to identify it belongs to the rightful owner.

if i will u, i feel being robbed. u hv the rites to protect ur own works.
the reporter did not display any professionalism, claimming over others work shows no respect to others n himself. a reporter shd report the thruth n facts honestly, how can i believe wat he reported is true n correct since first of all he has lost my trust by claiming over others ppl's wk (dishonest).
to me, if someone wans to use my work, i m ok, no big deal even never credit me, but shd not claim over my work :nono: ... jus my point of view.
