Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX100 & LEICA D-Lux Type 109

leica shops are now offering a leica leather overnight bag for DLUX purchases using POSB DBS cards for the first 200 units. I think the bag looks fugly but might appeal to some. I picked up my unit today. Something interesting I discovered is the LX100 is made in China while the DLux is made in Japan. That means there are separate assembly lines for these 2 products.

I read this interesting bit on a leica forum where someone said he was told by a leica sales staff that both are made in the same factory, but of course it doesn't corroborate with the labelling.

The bottom of the camera said it was made in Japan, which frankly I don't understand unless it was to do with being an early demonstrator: the sales assistant was quite clear that it comes from the same production line as the LX100 (see more on that below) and the Lumix is made in China. Something isn't quite right here.....

I had a short conversation with the Leica sales assistant about the differences between the two cameras and they volunteered that aside from cosmetics, there is essentially no difference in terms of the hardware (for example no mention was made of lenses being assembled differently or with different coatings). Aside from the 3 year warrantee, LR, excellent Leica after sales service and better resale value, the differences come down both to the cosmetics and also to different firmware - the assistant confirmed that the Leica JPEG engine would be different from Panasonic and also - as one would expect - confirmed that there would be no detectable difference in raw files. They explained that the cameras are made in the same factory on the same production line; in essence they stop making the Lumix bodies every so often to make a dedicated run of Leicas. I suppose that it's possible that a Leica workforce may take a particularly close interest in the assembly of their batch of cameras, or may have different quality control procedures - but I also have to say that I have owned quite a lot of Lumix gear and every piece has been utterly reliable.

I read about that in that forum a while ago. My guess is that the Leica staff probably assumed both are made in the same factory like previous LX/D-Lux models. Think this is the 1st time LX is made in china? To me, it doesn't really matter as long as QC adheres to Panasonic's standard. Olympus OMDs are all made in China and I find the built quality to be good.

Cool...your leatherette looks great. I cannot wait to take it out tomorrow after batt is fully charged. I also got the auto lens cap...but with this cap, I cannot have any filter...even the really thin ones. Heard JJS one has more space between the lens and the cap.

Yup, agreed. The build quality of the review LX100 I had was solid, really could find no fault with it.

yeap... even the M9 that is made in Germany had issues with it's sensor

Was told that the leica has over 150 unique parts to the LX100. Read somewhere that even the coating on the lens are unique to the Dlux. who Know??

some shots of the type 109.... finally!

mine is a ricleo exclusive leather edition.

Ooi, dun show off your Leica on LX100 thread leh...Side note, your diy is damn good hahaha.

Think he got no choice bro.. There isnt a designated sub forum for leica (cannot be talking leica in the 'others' right....?) so he has to find somewhere who is its close relative... Hahaha..

wa hehe... read from where? share the info ma.....

definitely the entire outer casing would be unique, but most likely the lens module should be the same since they both bear the leica branding?

ya no choice hehe.....anyway type 109 is a lx100 rebadge keke....

one of the reasons why i got the type 109 is also because i felt it would be easier to customize and apply leatherette... with the Lx100 one would have to cut the leatherette to fit the handgrip keke...

I read on dpreview that there is a cokin ultra slim filter that will fit under the auto lens cap, but it's not cheap.... B+W levels or even more expensive.

Probably not sold in Singapore. Already 43mm is not a popular size...mostly use on Leica lens.
