This have to ask why ppl starts shop across borders.
why this situation does not apply to Apple?(we rarely buy iphone from overseas)

I think cameras are small enough to be shipped without crazy fees compared to iMacs and MacBooks.

As for iPhone. I think 70% of ppl buying phones go thru the contact method leaving only a few buying without contract. Also apple, Samsung price them correctly to deter buying from Malaysia for example, just to save $50-100 and forgoing the warranty.

Cameras and lens are another breed altogether as panny might sell like 100 lens a month vs 10,000 iPhones a month. Thus the big mark up against overseas market. It became worth to buy from Japan and lose the local warranty but gain $500 in your pocket.

Don't think panny sg will do anything.

I rather save the $500.

Fundamental difference is price.
IN this case, the price difference is almost $400, which is 25%, for a small item that can easily be shipped!
Of course people will grab.

For Apple products, even if there is price difference, we are only talking small %, maybe up to 10%.
Not that much incentive to do so.
Also, mobile products like iPhone are usually tied to the telco who subsidize the cost.
But I do know many people buy iMac, MacBooks and other higher price Apple stuff from HK where it's much cheaper.

Apple makes sure their prices are very strictly controlled across their own shops and authorized retailers. The only thing I can save on buying Apple stuff overseas is GST but that's still 7% which I don't mind saving.

True.. But with a globalised economy and ability to shop across borders, they are slow to react to the situation...like the recently announced hmv going into administration, if Eveyone starts buying elsewhere via ecommerce or via hand carry etc, panny lumix division might as well close shop here..

Management methods and work attitudes in Singapore suck. Most of our local companies, if not for cheap labor, would have sunk by now.

Guys, all I can share with you with regards to this situation is that we are trying our best, less any discussion here goes out of topic and become an increasing kopitiam thread on discussing the future/Japanese culture/hierarchy blah blah blah instead of discussing about this lens instead hahaha.

On a separate note, It will be great if you guys who bought from Japan can PM me to discuss how to help all of us =)

Hi Guys...

Is Amazon Japan the cheapest now? My sis is in Japan, Hiroshima... will be back next month... where can she get a better pricing than Amazon?

Prices on amazon.co.jp can vary from hour to hour also depending on the market place prices. I am watching the Sigma SD1 and the price varies between ¥30,000 from morning to evening.

This is what happens when price differences are too wide in different markets, thanks to the internet.

Not to worry, Panasonic is not alone - many other things are cheaper overseas than Singapore and have been so for many years.

If i can get $1200 for Oly 75 f1.8 vs $1400 for Pany 35-100 f2.8, which one should i get?

And what if the Oly is only $1000?

I would get the 75mm

Dunno. I would say 35-100 as its more versatile. Again depends on the photographer. 75 is a more specialized prime.

Depends on needs. What/how do you shoot?
For me, the zoom is the better choice for versatility. Almost every time I go out to shoot, I wish I had a good and fast zoom like the 35-100 or 12-35.

As most replied, versatility vs performance, your money your choice. for ultimate iq, nothing beats the 75, which for me it's great for still portrait, non event type lens, where I have time & space to frame. You did mention you had d5100 on other thread, so if you want more shallow dof kind of shots, go with a power prime like 135/2 type rather then m43. But if for family gathering to shoot kids or do events, nothing beats the 35-100.

It doesn't matter. All it takes is your needs of taking photography. If BOKEH is a must for you, go take 75mm F1.8.
If VERSATILE and GOOD IQ is on your list, go grab 35-100. You don't have to be calculating to be smart.

There are numerous reports in the German Systemkamera Forum that the 2.8/35-100mm lens does not really have 100mm at the long end. Forum members and owners of the lens claim that it is only a 35-85mm lens in reality, which would be more than the usual tolerances. Anyone here got the same experience?

Not very uncommon, lots of lenses differ quite a lot, even primes often don't match the claimed focal length.

Love to see some comparison in focal length with the great 70-200 f2.8 from other camps
