hey guys, need help.. lumix FZ18 comparing to fujifilm s8100fd. which is better and valuable?
I made this decision before. I ultimately chosed FZ18 because I was able to get it cheaper than the 8100. If you want it cheap, go for the 8100, however the FZ18 is better in a lot of ways. In fact I feel that the FZ18 is amongst the top of all the equivalent prosumer zooms, heres why, please contradict me if you feel that its necessary.
Biggest Aperture F2.8-4.2, most others start at F3.1 - 5-ish.
Longest focal length of 504... not like 18mm matters much but... FZ28 has only 486 (darn!) but the wide angle starts at 27mm... (I don't see a difference really, 1 step back. But you don't always get to take 1 step forward when you zoom.).
Battery Power. Most websites agree that FZ18 has 4 hours of battery life, the rest have about 3 hours, S8100 has 2 hours but uses AA batteries.
About the noise, I heard reviews that FZ18 is slightly better than others, although the difference is almost insignificant I believe. Actually I am starting to get used to the noise, just over expose 1 step in most cases can help a lot.
Leica Lens. the only one that come close might be Sony's H9 or H50? (I think so at least, I'm not very familiar with lens but I know Leica is good.)
What else is there to talk about? I think S8100 has no RAW format, neither does it have 16:9 aspect ratio, I can't remember now and I'm too lazy to check.
But at this moment you might want to be looking at FZ28 if you feel a little richer.
As for your question about the nightshots. I did one this morning, I don't know how to post images here and the images are on my personal blog so I shall not share for this moment. But the noise is bearable at 400. ISO 800 is still bearable if you have no choice, but you definitely can't afford to under-expose. Keeping in mind that this is without using Noise Reduction. I usually photoshop a little when the pictures are good and definitely saves the day. Plus noise at 400 is not really visible below 66% zoom. If you view on a 1024x768 screen, the standard size you're viewing is 16.7%, don't think you'll see the noise. =)
And I shot a lot of shots handheld at 1/4, ISO400, 4am this morning. I'm surprised that I didn't get blurring!
But truth be told, the noise issue can be irritating to me, but live with it unless you are willing to buy a camera 5x the price. dSLR that is. OR unless zoom is not important to you.
I hope this helps you! Not very well written and not very proficient language, but I tried. =X
