the FZ18 is a beast which can produce unexpected good results. that's why even i've upgraded to a DSLR, i still kept my FZ18 for light-weight travelling or normal point and shoot purposes.

oh yes, i agree that lozenges skills doesnt exactly make him like a newbie!

i like the way u put it zzyzx.. "beast which can produce unexpected good results". makes me happier while taking pictures :)

anyway i went around arab st to take some pics.. plz give me ur comments,if any..i used different modes for different shots, but i can't remember which modes for any particular shot =x

(the photos arent in any set.. do ignore the terrapins pictures ^^ )

Some nice pics Zephyr, my favorite was P1020462, it gave the girl a sense of vulnerability being a different race and in different clothing, especially red. Nice shot, unfortunately it also looks like a voyeur shot! haha just kidding. You guys make me feel like a complete newbie. Well I am, but it makes me feel newer.

Anyway who is signing up for the lumix workshop?

Seems like I'm always out of date. First I didn't know there was Comex, then I got cheated, and now I realized theres an FZ28... and what about the lumix workshop? Haha.

Anyway did anyone check out the FZ28 yet? I just saw it, some good improvements but I guess it wasn't worth it for me considering how much cheaper I got my FZ18, and the zoom is SLIGHTLY shorter although the MP makes up for it.

Yoz..thank you ombre and coolzephyr for your encouraging comments. I am completely flatter by all of your good comments. I only have CPL and UV filter (which i always keep it on). For the sunset i did not use any special filter. I only did some contrast adjustment using Adoble camera raw. Actually some of the shots are not planned. Sometimes, I feel disappointed when the sun is not good, rain etc... but still try to take a few pic which i hope will still turn out well, and sometimes it did. Actually i did'nt pose my many not so nice photos hehe.

any FZ18/FZ28 users want to go Chinese Garden over the weekend to take some shots?

You actually use RAW formats? How's your experience been so far? Are the pictures really any different from the JPEG modes? I find RAW a little troublesome, and they are kind of huge too.

And urm, where did you get your CPL anyway? I'm looking to get one but been too lazy to travel to town.

Is there a difference btwn how a RAW format picture looks like and how a JPEG picture looks like? I have been reading up online about RAW, and, correct me if i'm wrong, but it seems like there isn't much difference in the quality... RAW is for people who like to edit their pictures right? but JPEG pics can be edited too, no?

ahh.. sorry, i need u guys to teach a noobie here yet again.

Sometimes I use RAW format. I'm really not an expert in raw here and it is quite a difficult topic to discuss hehe... I think the raw photo will look a little different to your JPEG since there is no basic image processing done to it such as saturation, sharpness, contrast, noise reduction apply to it. Basically, it is say that RAW is like a camera negative which has not been processed. So, your picture will look less saturated, more noise and less sharp.

Actually most of the picture that I posted are in JPEG. I did try some RAW, but i have not really master it yet in post processing. I try to take some RAW photos on scene where i feel more important to me and where i believe more detail preservation is necessary...still experimenting ;)

Oh i got my CPL at ALan photo at SIM LIM square..thinkg around $30...can't remember.

Hi Coolzephyr,
basically, RAW capture give you serious processing power for your images and for those who likes to work through an image to get the most out of it.

Technically speaking, RAW is 16-bit data file compare to 8-bit data in JPEG file. Meaning RAW can hold more tonal and color information than a JPEG. With RAW you can have better control of the details from brightest and darkest area of an image and therefore has a larger range of image adjustments without introducing more noises.

Yup JPEG picture can definitely be edited too.

by the way, you may like to read this thread written by others in forum http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=412929&page=2

Lozenges, Just curious. You mentioned that you maintain the CPL + UV filters on your cam at all times, how is it that you still manage to cap the lens when not using? My guess probably is that you use the Hood adapter? Even so I think it will still block?

One more question to all... did anyone try using flash in M mode? (or S, A modes). It seems like it overrides your settings and go into an Auto mode if the flash fires. I tried taking two similar pictures, one with 1/1000 shutter, another with 1/20 or so, both looks equal. Two possibilities... the flash power reduced.. (unlikely? they looked the same), the camera took over the settings to compensate the flash.

Is there anyway to use manual controls with flash then? Like maybe custom or something.

so... talking abt RAW vs JPEG, the statement RAW is unprocessed format is basically wrong. don't forget the data was once converted from analog to digital so that it can be stored in your SD card. The advantage of RAW is that it retains more details in the image as comapred to JPEG. This are very useful during PP. Personally, i do not shoot RAW using my FZ18 as i find the out-of-camera JPEG to be satisfying. If i were to shoot some assignments, i'll be using my 40D with RAW instead of the FZ18 also.

bro i think he mean he only keep the uv filter on all the time. it is never advisable to having two filters on at the same time due to internal flare which might degrade image quality.

as for the flash, try shutter speed of 1/1000sec and 10sec at night shooting landscapes with a subject near you and you'll see the diff. remember to use a tripod. you'll notice for 1/1000sec, only the subject is bright with dark background, while for 10sec, your subject, together with your background is bright. :)

bro. no 1 seems a bit OOF or is it my eyes playing tricks on me? :dunno:

i notice a lot of ppl using this toy are having very good results..

anyway good takes.

just like to ask something..

since the fz18 by itself cannot shoot portraits with a blurry background, even though the aperture is set to the smallest possible number with focus, is there any compatible add-on lens that can do that?
