OMG! Look at the EM-1 aka the now official E-M1 Thread

is it ugly?

I mean the lumix 12-35mm lens. Can't Olympus support lumix lenses? Purposely one.

With the E-M1, it seems like the purple fringing issue is improved. But that 7-14mm is still a piece of shiet glass. Flaring, CA, PF all over the place.

A moment of light hearted-ness...

A friend of mine who runs a camera retail shop and I were chatting today, and he said a guy came into his shop and asked for a weird camera.

So I asked him... "what weird camera?" He said the guy insisted it is a new camera model but he looked around and all his guys in the shop just shrugged.

"What camera did he wanted?" I was totally curious now.

"Something called ordengi or something. You know of such model?" he asked. Sheepishly because he thought he knows his job pretty well.

"Might be Russian", I offered... but a moment later I realised what that customer was looking...

"OMDEMI"...

Olympus Marketing fail...

Have a good evening everyone.

Hahaha.... This is so funny!!

While we still on the topic of "buying an Olympus in Singapore or elsewhere", I am curious about the prices in Malaysia since I have heard (correct me if I am wrong) that Malaysia has dropped or lowered import taxes which makes electronic products prices similar, or lower than in Singapore.

So what is the going rate now in MY for the E-M1?

Those who are living in, been to, still in, from Malaysia can share the prices? No need (in fact, better don't) name the shops. Just a price range for reference.

My friend told me that the street price for EM-1 with 12-40 is RM7k, which to me is only slightly cheaper that street price here.
For Oly 17 f1.8, the street price there is RM1.5k, compared to $620 I was quoted here.
Previously, I bought the EM-5 in KL as it was much cheaper than the street price in SG.

The 7-14 doesn't have nano coating I think.

Which 7-14mm is so bad? The ZD or the Panasonic?

no la, actually users of the Pana 7-14 will acknowledge its still the best available wide angle lens in MFT line-up for its sharpness and f4.0 (I believe) capable of great results. I had the 9-18 beforehand but ended up still selling it for the Pana 7-14.

taken with the Pana 7-14/4.0

rather its the issue of easy lens flare and purple blobs (i do get them sometimes) that irritates us quite a bit.
You can see some samples posted here by this nice guy: http://www.mu-43.com/showthread.php?t=45013

For old timers, there is always the hefty ZD 7-14mm SHG. And hopefully soon enough there is a MZPro UWA zoom. But at the meantime, to be perfectly honest, it is just two more steps in post processing for me (that is like another minute of processing) to get rid of the weird artifacts. So it is more of an irritating issue than a real issue. But still, the Panasonic 7-14mm is a cheap UWA lens as compared to the ZD equivalent. And not to mention... light.

My wife once remarked "Then shoot black and white lor"... and I think she is right. LOL!

Your wife is indeed a wise woman ;)

Just curious, anyone mounted the ZD equivalent on a MFT body and care to share about the usability ? The only ZD 7-14 I've seen are the ones on display in Oly Service Ctr.

And I believe I've heard before there is indeed a Pro UWA ver for MFT in the works. I just can't recall where did I hear it from , from the Oly guys or from a website

Some of the guys in this community have this lens still, and I will borrow one from them when I am back to test it out. See results later. I owned it before and I know it will be quite easy to handle with the E-M1 with the HLD-7 mounted. Just that it is quite a hefty lens. Most MFT users will think "Oh my! How ridiculous heavy this set up is, I am going back to my old DSLR" and the likes. So it is pretty much a set up for those who owns ZD lenses who will appreciate being able to take out their ZD lenses from the dry cab and have a new lease of life with a "current camera".

Just to check if any of u ever encountered fuzzy / blur / smudged area on some part of an image while other areas seems ok in the same photo looks ok?
I've came across some images like this and wonder if the lens / body stablisation is the culprit.

Not that I have noticed. Will pay attention to the images and see if this is indeed the result of the IBIS being too aggressive. (Maybe it is because I am shaky all the time, so the IBIS is syncing with me). Hope the rest of the guys who sees this will check on their E-M1 as well.

Can you post a cropped image of the area that you mentioned that was affected by IBIS, or whatever reason? Just for reference for the guys here. Thank you.

shutter shock ? http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3576123

i've seen alot post on this in Dpreview...but no one in CS seems to have this issue or didnt notice it

Sorry to interrupt this current discussion on possible fuzzy/blur area in the image.

I am considering if I should get the E-M1 or should I stick with my E-M5 and E-P5 (currently being put on sale, but will cancel it should I change my mind). Hope to hear Current E-M1 users who previously owned either E-M5 or E-P5.

My consideration are:-
- I do not own any 4/3 lens,
- Usually use M4/3 prime lens,
- Use the camera mainly while on holiday,
- Take family photo, street, architecture, etc.,

What I like about E-M5:-
- Small size, light, fast AF and built-in EVF

What I like about E-P5:-
- Same as E-M5 but also like the extra eg. wifi, sharper screen, better EVF quality, dials feel better built, etc.

What I don't like about E-P5:-
- With VF-4 attached, it cannot really fit into my small camera bag (intend to keep bag small while on holiday).

I kept my E-M5 as a companion to the E-M1. This way, while on holiday, I can have two mounted cameras ready to shoot. With a proper carrying system you can be super fast to shoot. For example, if I am at a scenic area, I might have a 7-14mm mounted on E-M5 while I have the 12-40Pro mounted on the E-M1 for quick street style shoots (with people/culture as subject focus).

If $$$ is not really a concern, then the E-M1 is a good buy. But it has its little problems (like ANY OTHER CAMERA SYSTEM). Every one has their good and bad, pros and cons. So buy what works for you. In the tests about fuzziness, blur, whatever, I don't think I can remember when was the last time I shot anything at f8 other than for macro, IS-off, and mounted on a tripod (so no IBIS issue). Most of the time, when I really need IBIS to work, it is usually lens opened WIDE and partially supported. In my believe of "real world tests", yes, that issue might be there, but also can be avoided.

I wrote on my "resurrected" new blog on tech toys, you might want to give it a read on my thoughts on the E-M1 just to give you another perspective.

ps. I am adding a third camera while on holiday, which is a Panasonic GX7, permanently with the 7-14mm mounted as only Panny bodies will correct the insanely difficult to control CA and flaring on the 7-14mm. So it looks like the E-M1 will have the 12-40Pro mounted and the E-M5 with either the 35-100mm or 100-300mm mounted for non-discreet street shooting. As you might have realised by now, I don't believe in primes. So we have a varying style of shooting and therefore my comments only serve as a different perspective to what you might find helpful.

It might seem I carry a lot of gear, but all of them are packed into a Pelican case and while holiday they sit secured in the rented vehicle. So while on holiday I only pull out what I need at location, and not to mention in some countries, rest areas are hard to find and the Pelican case makes a fantastic stool while the others are "suffering"... ^_^

Happy shooting and I hope I have given you a different perspective on my set up and help you with your purchase decision.

Thanks for your fast reply.

I have not intention to sell my E-M5 but mainly because the low re-sale price means keeping it make more sense to me. I actually like the E-P5 a lot except for the EVF adds to the overall height.

Will read your blog for more details. Thanks again.

You are most welcome. I just happen to be online. ;)
